The Grenada continent question has a short answer: Grenada is a Caribbean island state that belongs to Latin American and Caribbean bodies, yet we found no record of it in South American trade blocs. Its weight is small in numbers, but it holds a full vote in CARICOM, CELAC and the OAS.

Where Grenada Sits: Geography, Politics and Identity

Geographically, Grenada belongs to the Caribbean and not to the South American mainland. In diplomacy it is counted inside the wider Latin America and Caribbean region, which is why it takes part in groups such as the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC).

Its head of state is the Governor-General, Dame Cécile La Grenade, who has held the post since 7 May 2013, according to Wikipedia and CARICOM. Its head of government is Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), sworn in on 24 June 2022.

The NDC won nine of 15 seats in 2022, against six for the New National Party (NNP). Foreign policy sits with Joseph Andall, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Trade and Export Development.

Andall has said Grenada wants closer ties with Africa and with South and Central America. That fits a small country that spreads its partnerships widely, because it cannot rely on the weight of any single bloc.

The Numbers That Matter

Grenada had about 117,400 people in October 2026, a modelled estimate from Worldometer rather than an official count. The last full census confirmed in our research was in 2011, and the Central Statistical Office published parish counts in August 2024.

Nominal output was about US$1.42 billion in 2025, up 5.1%, according to the Macrotrends data aggregator. That places Grenada among the smallest economies in the hemisphere, although this guide did not compile a full ranking.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) estimated real growth of 4.4% for 2025, driven by investment and construction. We could not confirm a 2026 growth projection.

Indicator Value Owner and period
Population 117,362 (modelled) Worldometers, mid-2026
Nominal GDP US$1.42 billion, up 5.1% Macrotrends, 2025
Real GDP growth 4.4% IMF estimate, 2025
Inflation, end-period 0.3% IMF, 2025
Primary deficit 3.2% of GDP IMF, 2025
Citizenship by investment revenue 14.7% of GDP, then 3.5% IMF, 2024 and 2025
Stayover tourist arrivals 54,565, up 12% Caribbean Tourism Organization, Q1 2026

The IMF says the fiscal rule was suspended for post-hurricane reconstruction. It expects a primary-balance floor of 1.5% of GDP to return from 2027, with a debt target of 60% of GDP by 2033.

Grenada has no national central bank and uses the Eastern Caribbean dollar, issued by the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB). The ECCB Monetary Council reappointed Governor Dr Timothy N. J. Antoine to a third five-year term from 1 February 2026.

Regional Bodies: CARICOM, CELAC and the OAS

CARICOM and the Eastern Caribbean

Grenada is a member of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), its main regional home. The 50th Heads of Government meeting ran from 24 to 27 February 2026, and the 51st from 5 to 8 July 2026.

Philip J. Pierre, Prime Minister of Saint Lucia, has chaired CARICOM since 1 July 2026. In July 2026 leaders, Grenada included, said third-country arrangements with the United States would be for transit, not settlement, according to the Gleaner.

Foreign-relations summaries also list Grenada in the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States, the Commonwealth and the Caribbean Development Bank. These memberships give it far more day-to-day influence than any Latin American bloc does.

CELAC

Grenada is a member of CELAC, a forum of Latin American and Caribbean states. Colombia’s Gustavo Petro handed the rotating presidency to Uruguay’s Yamandú Orsi at the X Summit in Bogotá on 21 March 2026, according to Colombia’s foreign ministry.

An emergency CELAC meeting on 4 January 2026, called over the US operation in Venezuela, ended without a joint declaration, according to Searchlight. The sources we read do not state Grenada’s position at that meeting.

CELAC is a door to Europe as well as to its neighbours for countries like Grenada.

The OAS, Mercosur, the Andean Community and SICA

Grenada is a member of the Organization of American States (OAS). Its 56th General Assembly met in Panama City from 22 to 24 June 2026, amid regional tensions over Nicaragua, Bolivia, Cuba and Venezuela.

We found no Grenadian statement from that assembly. We also found no record of Grenadian membership or association with Mercosur, the Andean Community or the Central American Integration System (SICA), which is an absence of evidence rather than a verified negative.

Alliances: Venezuela, ALBA, Cuba and China

Venezuela

Diplomatic relations with Venezuela date from 1977. Mitchell and Andall visited Caracas in April 2025 and signed a cooperation roadmap, according to Prensa Latina.

The United States seized Nicolás Maduro in early January 2026, and Delcy Rodríguez is now Acting President. In the days after the US operation, Mitchell said the events in Venezuela were “pushing the region into more instability”.

He added that “diplomacy, dialogue, negotiation and compromise are the only means” to resolve differences. Rodríguez later visited Grenada in April 2026, with talks on energy, agriculture, education and trade, according to Caribbean National Weekly.

ALBA, Cuba and China

Grenada joined ALBA, the alliance tied to Venezuela and Cuba, as a full member in December 2014. Venezuelan help has included PetroCaribe oil financing, a housing project and hospital rebuilding, but we did not check whether its ALBA status has changed.

Reporting from May 2019 put the PetroCaribe debt at EC$372.1 million, or 11.5% of GDP, according to Ministry of Finance figures. We could not confirm a current figure or any restructuring.

Cuba and Grenada established relations in 1979 and resumed them in 1994, according to a secondary source. Cuba, the United States, Venezuela and China all have embassies in Grenada.

Grenada switched recognition from Taiwan to the People’s Republic of China in 2005, though some sources say 2004, in exchange for aid including a cricket stadium. In January 2025 it affirmed the one-China principle, according to the Canada Caribbean Institute.

Disputes and the Relationship with Washington

We found no active territorial dispute involving Grenada. Its public disagreements in the research concern policy rather than borders.

Grenada first rejected a US request to accept non-nationals for deportation, according to Caribbean National Weekly. On 30 January 2026 it signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding on possible transfers.

As reported, Grenada may accept or reject each case at its sole discretion, and Mitchell said Washington must pay all costs, including direct flights. We could not read the memorandum itself, so these details rest on press summaries.

Citizenship by investment (CBI) lets foreigners obtain citizenship through a qualifying contribution or property purchase. The IMF lists disruption to CBI and foreign direct investment among Grenada’s downside risks.

A US proclamation of 16 December 2025 placed partial visa restrictions on Antigua and Barbuda and on Dominica, and Grenada was not listed, according to the migration site Immigrant Invest. That comes from an industry source, so check the US State Department before relying on it.

How Grenada Compares with Its Peers

The closest peers are Dominica, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Antigua and Barbuda. We did not compile a full comparison of their output or debt, so this guide does not rank them.

The one sourced contrast is the US visa treatment above, where Antigua and Barbuda and Dominica faced restrictions and Grenada did not. The shared currency is a common thread, since Antigua and Barbuda’s Prime Minister Gordon Browne chaired the ECCB Monetary Council meeting reported on 14 February 2026.

Tourism is Grenada’s visible strength, with 54,565 stayover arrivals in the first quarter of 2026, up 12% on the first quarter of 2025, according to the Caribbean Tourism Organization via Caribbean Journal. Cruise figures from two reports could not be reconciled, so we do not cite them.

What It Means for Foreigners, and What to Watch

For investors and expats

The IMF lists tourism and import dependency, natural disasters, and disruption to CBI and foreign investment as downside risks. Low inflation and steady growth are the other side of the ledger.

Agent websites quote a National Transformation Fund contribution of US$235,000 for a family of up to four, and a real estate route from US$270,000 held for at least five years. These figures come from law-firm and agent sites, so check the official fee schedule before applying.

Mitchell attended the World Governments Summit in Dubai on 3 to 5 February 2026 and made an official visit to Qatar on 13 to 19 August 2026. Together with visa-waiver agreements with several African countries, this shows a government courting partners well beyond the hemisphere.

What to watch

Grenada votes on 5 November 2026 for 15 seats, and a party needs eight to govern. Mitchell called the vote almost a year before the October 2027 constitutional deadline, and 46 candidates are running.

Emmalin Pierre leads the NNP and is the first woman to take it into a general election, while Keith Mitchell is not standing after 42 years in Parliament. The NNP platform, Better Grenada, promises to cut corporate tax from 28% to 25%, and Peter David’s Democratic People’s Movement contests nine seats.

The only poll we found was a self-selected online survey, which is not representative and is no forecast. The result was unknown when this guide was written, so check who holds the foreign affairs portfolio afterwards.

Other markers include the CARICOM mid-year meeting, normally held in February, and the national budget, usually presented in the first quarter. We did not verify either date for 2027, so confirm them on official sites.
