RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The average price of gasoline is 30% more expensive for drivers in the early days of September when compared to the lowest average registered in the year, in January. This is shown by the Ticket Log Price Index (IPTL), Edenred’s fleet management and mobility solutions brand.

The fuel sold at Brazilian gas stations for an average of R$6.237 (US$1.17) in the first days of this month, but cost an average of R$4.816 at the pumps in January. In the same period the price of ethanol rose 42%, reaching an average of R$5.371.

Similarly to last month, all Brazilian regions reported higher gasoline and ethanol prices in early September. With no readjustment at refineries since the first half of August, gasoline prices reflected the rise in anhydrous ethanol, up 1.1% compared to August, explains Edenred Brasil’s head of urban markets Douglas Pina.

The most expensive gasoline was sold in the Midwest, at an average of R$6.368, after the 1.60% increase, when compared to the end of August. In the South, its average price increased 2.32%, the highest in the whole of Brazil, but the price per liter was the lowest in the first half of the month, at R$6.049.

The most expensive ethanol was found in the Northeast, at R$5.547, up 2.32% from last month. Despite the 4.59% increase, the cheapest liter of ethanol was sold in the Midwest, at an average of R$5.014.

GASOLINE PRICES PER STATE

Broken down by states, Piauí had the most expensive gasoline in Brazil, at R$6.640. The state with the lowest average price was Amapá, where service stations sold gasoline at R$5.585.

The biggest rise in the average price of gasoline was recorded in Rio Grande do Norte, up 3.77% compared to the end of August. No state reported a drop in gasoline prices in the first days of September.

Ethanol posted its highest average price per liter in Rio Grande do Sul, at R$6.084. On the other hand, the cheapest fuel was sold in São Paulo, at R$4.481. In Rondônia, gas stations recorded the country’s most significant increase, up 10.16%.

The IPTL is a fuel price index, based on the fuel fill-ups made at Ticket Log’s 21,000 accredited service stations by 1 million vehicles, an average of 8 sales per second.
