Export Boom Drives Brazilian Food Costs Up 162% Over Past 12 Years

Brazilian food prices skyrocketed 162% between 2012 and 2024, according to research from the Brazilian Institute of Economics at Getulio Vargas Foundation.

This surge dramatically outpaces the country’s general inflation rate of 109% during the same period. Agricultural exports fuel this crisis as farmers increasingly abandon domestic food crops for lucrative international commodities.

Land dedicated to soybean cultivation nearly doubled from 23 million hectares in 2010 to 44 million hectares in 2023. Corn cultivation simultaneously expanded from 13 million to 22.6 million hectares.

These export gains came at a direct cost to domestic food security. Rice production areas shrank dramatically from 2.8 million hectares to just 1.6 million during the same timeframe. Beans and other staple crops faced similar declines as farmers pursued export profits.

Food inflation hit 7.69% in 2024 alone, far exceeding Brazil’s overall inflation rate of 4.83%. Fruits and vegetables saw the most extreme price increases, jumping 299% and 246% respectively since 2012.

Climate change compounds these problems. Agricultural productivity declined 1.5 percentage points over the past decade. Researchers estimate global food sector productivity now runs 20% below potential due to climate impacts.

President Lula’s Struggles with Food Costs and Popularity

President Lula‘s administration faces mounting political pressure as food costs erode his popularity. Recent polls show his disapproval ratings now exceed approval numbers by two percentage points.

The government eliminated import tariffs on numerous food items in response. These tariffs previously ranged from 7.2% on corn to 32% on sardines. Officials also allocated 350 million reais to purchase 445,000 metric tons of staple foods for national reserves.

Economists warn these measures provide limited relief against structural problems. Brazil’s agricultural export orientation continues driving domestic prices upward despite projected record harvests of 328.3 million tons in 2024/25.

“We want to make cheap food reach the workers’ table,” President Lula declared, making food inflation his top 2025 priority. Without addressing the fundamental export-domestic balance in agriculture, however, Brazilian families will likely continue facing escalating grocery bills.
