Brazilian Industrial Confidence Remains Subdued for Third Straight Month
The National Confederation of Industry (CNI) reported today that Brazil’s Industrial Entrepreneur Confidence Index (ICEI) barely moved from 49.1 points in February to 49.2 points in March 2025.
This slight uptick fails to cross the crucial 50-point threshold that separates optimism from pessimism in the industrial sector. The marginal increase represents the third consecutive month of subdued sentiment among Brazilian industrial entrepreneurs.
Business confidence continues to hover at its lowest levels since April 2023, reflecting persistent concerns about economic conditions. Brazil’s Current Conditions Index actually deteriorated in March, dropping to 44.0 points from 44.4 in February.
Entrepreneurs view both their companies’ situations and Brazil‘s overall economic landscape less favorably than six months ago. The assessment of current economic conditions specifically worsened from 37.0 to 36.6 points.
The Expectations Index showed modest improvement, rising to 51.8 points from 51.5. This optimism stems mainly from individual company forecasts rather than broader economic prospects. Economic expectations remain negative despite a minimal increase from 42.8 to 43.0 points.
Industry plays a crucial role in Brazil’s economy, accounting for 24.7% of the country’s GDP in 2024. The prolonged pessimism follows a significant downturn from September’s peak of 53.3 points, which marked the highest reading since October 2022.
Brazil’s Business Confidence Falters
This lack of confidence aligns with recent GDP data showing Brazil’s economy slowed to 0.2% growth in the fourth quarter of 2024, down from 0.7% in the previous quarter. High interest rates and persistent inflation hamper business activity across sectors.
Economic projections offer little immediate relief. Experts anticipate that restrictive monetary policies will continue throughout 2025, with the ICEI likely remaining below the confidence threshold in the coming months.
The February data revealed that 18 out of 29 industrial sectors exhibited pessimism, highlighting widespread concerns across Brazil’s manufacturing landscape. Business confidence averaged 54.36 points historically from 2004 to 2025, making current levels significantly below normal.
Analysts expect subdued economic performance throughout 2025 compared to 2024, with GDP projected to expand by just over 2% amid cautious business investment and muted consumer demand.
