Copel Sells Major Brazilian Hydropower Plant to Czech Firm ENERGO-PRO for R$1.55 Billion

Copel, one of Brazil’s biggest electricity companies, has sold the Baixo Iguaçu hydroelectric plant to ENERGO-PRO, a Czech energy group, for R$1.55 billion ($290 million).

This deal was made official in Copel’s announcement on June 30, 2025. Here’s how the deal worked: Copel already owned 30% of the Baixo Iguaçu plant. It bought the remaining 70% from another Brazilian company, Neoenergia, for R$1.05 billion.

After that, Copel sold the whole plant to ENERGO-PRO. This means ENERGO-PRO now owns 100% of the plant. Baixo Iguaçu is a modern power plant in southern Brazil’s Paraná state. It started operating in 2019.

The plant can produce 350 megawatts of electricity. That’s enough to supply about one million people, or 8% of all the electricity used in Paraná. The plant cost about €500 million to build and has a government license to operate until 2049.

Copel made this move as part of its plan to focus on other projects that make more profit. The company said the sale will help it become more efficient and invest in new areas.

Copel received 10% of the sale price up front and will get the rest when the deal is fully closed, after all conditions are met. For ENERGO-PRO, this is their biggest investment in Latin America so far.

ENERGO-PRO Expands in Brazil with Baixo Iguaçu Hydropower Plant

The company runs more than 50 hydropower plants in Europe and now adds Baixo Iguaçu as its largest single plant. ENERGO-PRO paid for the deal using its own money and loans.

The company wants to spread its business across different countries to lower risks from things like weather or political changes. The Baixo Iguaçu plant is also important for local nature.

It helps control the water flow to the famous Iguaçu Falls, making sure there is always enough water, even in dry times. The plant sells most of its electricity through long-term contracts that adjust for inflation, which gives ENERGO-PRO steady income.

This sale is part of a bigger trend in the energy industry. Companies are selling some assets to focus on new investments and attract foreign money. The deal brings new investment to Brazil’s energy sector and connects Brazilian and European businesses in a new way.
