COP26: MERCOSUR countries create group on climate change

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement to welcome the announcement, made at a meeting of the four countries’ Environment Ministers.

“This is the first time that the four MERCOSUR members have joined forces in favor of the search for common and effective solutions to the climate change issue. The four countries share common values and interests, as evidenced by the extensive coordination within MERCOSUR’s framework of regional integration,” the statement said.

NEGOTIATIONS

The meeting in Glasgow is scheduled to end on Friday, November 12, although negotiations may still continue.

With the official work agenda nearing its end, yesterday’s talks addressed issues such as the climate crisis and children’s rights, promoted by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). Issues such as fossil fuel use and action on the Amazon are still being debated.

More than 120 political leaders and thousands of experts and activists are attending COP26.

Six years ago, the Paris Agreement set the goal of limiting the increase in the Earth’s average temperature to between 1.5°C and 2°C above pre-industrial levels. In 2020, the year of the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, greenhouse gas emissions set historic records.
