Key Facts

Annual gain. Colombia’s MSCI COLCAP index posted a 43.1% year-on-year rise in April 2026, averaging 2,310 points in mid-month, up 4.6% from March.

Post-election pop. On 1 June 2026, the COLCAP jumped 5.5% in a single session after the first-round presidential vote, led by Ecopetrol, Cibest and Grupo Aval.

Sector shift. Financials now make up roughly 58% of the index, while energy’s weight has collapsed to about 8%, breaking the old correlation with oil prices.

Analyst target. Corficolombiana projected in late 2025 that the COLCAP could approach 2,450 points by December 2026 if credit growth recovers and political uncertainty fades.

Valuation view. In January 2026, 71.4% of analysts surveyed by Fedesarrollo considered COLCAP stocks cheap relative to fundamentals, though that was down from 92.1% a year earlier.

Colombia’s main stock index has become one of Latin America’s strongest performers in 2026, driven by a historic shift from oil to financials and by investor optimism that political uncertainty will ease after this year’s presidential election.

The Numbers Behind the COLCAP Rally

The MSCI COLCAP, which tracks the 20 most liquid stocks on the Bolsa de Valores de Colombia (BVC), averaged 2,310 points in mid-April 2026, according to data published by Portafolio on 22 April 2026. That represented a 4.6% gain from March and a 43.1% increase from April 2025, when the index stood near 1,614 points.

The rally has been sharp enough to surprise analysts. In March 2026, the index closed at 2,286 points, beating the consensus forecast of 2,195 by 91 points. By mid-April, the market was already trading above the median analyst target of 2,335 for month-end, with estimates ranging from 2,302 to 2,391.

A single-day snapshot on 1 June 2026 illustrated how politically sensitive the market has become. After the first-round presidential election, in which Abelardo De La Espriella took 43% of the vote, the COLCAP surged 5.5%. Ecopetrol rose 7-9%, Cibest gained around 8%, and Grupo Aval added roughly 8% on its preferred shares.

Why Financials Replaced Oil at the Top

The most important structural change in the Colombian market is invisible in the headline index level. According to a Corficolombiana analysis published by Portafolio on 1 December 2025, the financial sector’s weight in the COLCAP has jumped from roughly 46% to about 58%. Energy, meanwhile, has collapsed to just 8%, a fraction of its share a decade ago.

This shift has broken the old correlation between Colombian stocks and oil prices. For years, the COLCAP moved in tandem with crude. That relationship disappeared in 2024 and has been replaced by a tighter link to banking fundamentals: loan growth, interest-rate margins and credit quality.

Ecopetrol remains the wild card. The state oil company has lagged the broader recovery, but Corficolombiana argued that if its price-to-book multiple returned to 1.3x — still below historical peaks — the stock could reach COP 2,507, lifting its index weight back to 10% and pushing the COLCAP toward 2,134 points on that move alone.

The session read
The MSCI COLCAP eased 0.58%, with breadth positive — 7 of 9 names higher. Other led, while Industrials lagged.

What Could Stop the Rally

The risks are fiscal and political. Corficolombiana warned in December 2025 that the sustainability of the rally depends on reducing regulatory uncertainty, particularly around public finances and pension reform. The prolonged high-interest-rate environment also pressures bank loan books, a factor Fedesarrollo analysts flagged in January 2026.

Despite these risks, the mood among analysts has improved. Fedesarrollo’s January 2026 survey found that 66% of analysts expected the COLCAP to rise over the next three months, up from 50% in December 2025. The valuation index — measuring the share of analysts who see stocks as cheap — stood at 71.4%, down from 92.1% a year earlier, suggesting some of the easy gains have been made.

For foreign investors, the COLCAP’s rally is a reminder that Colombian equities had become deeply undervalued. JP Morgan warned in 2023 that the BVC carried the lowest valuations among emerging markets and even raised the possibility of a frontier-market reclassification. That threat has receded, but the index still trails the S&P 500 and Brazil’s Ibovespa over the past decade.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much has the COLCAP risen in 2026?

As of mid-April 2026, the MSCI COLCAP was up 43.1% year-on-year and averaged 2,310 points. In June 2026, the index jumped 5.5% in a single session following the first-round presidential election.

Which sectors dominate the COLCAP now?

Financials now account for roughly 58% of the index, while energy has fallen to about 8%. This marks a break from the historical correlation between Colombian stocks and oil prices.

What is the analyst target for year-end 2026?

Corficolombiana projected in late 2025 that the COLCAP could approach 2,450 points by December 2026, assuming credit growth recovers, political uncertainty fades and Ecopetrol revalues.
