China’s Undersea Marvel: The Jintang High-Speed Rail Tunnel

China has begun excavation on an ambitious undersea high-speed railway tunnel. The Jintang tunnel will connect Ningbo city to the Zhoushan islands in Zhejiang province.

This engineering feat promises to revolutionize travel in the region. The tunnel stretches 16.18 kilometers, with 11.21 kilometers running beneath the East China Sea.

It plunges to a maximum depth of 78 meters below sea level. Trains will zoom through at speeds up to 250 kilometers per hour. Construction teams face numerous challenges in this complex project.

They must navigate 28 transitions between soft and hard rock layers. The tunnel also passes under the busy Jintang Channel, a major shipping route to Zhoushan Port.

Two massive tunnel boring machines (TBMs) are tackling this herculean task. Named “Dinghai” and “Yongzhou,” these engineering marvels measure 135 meters in length.

Their cutterheads span an impressive 14.57 meters in diameter. These TBMs are equipped with advanced technology to overcome underwater pressures.

They feature heavily pressurized cutterheads and reduced cutter spacing. Intelligent monitoring systems help ensure precision in the excavation process.

China’s Jintang Tunnel

The project aims to dramatically reduce travel times in the region. Currently, a car journey from Ningbo to Zhoushan takes about 1.5 hours. The new rail link will slash this to a mere 26 minutes.

Moreover, the tunnel will integrate Zhoushan into China‘s extensive high-speed rail network. This connection will cut travel time from Zhoushan to Hangzhou from 3.5 hours to just 77 minutes.

The Jintang tunnel is part of a larger 77-kilometer railway project. It showcases China’s growing expertise in complex infrastructure development.

The country already boasts the world’s largest high-speed rail network, spanning over 46,000 kilometers. Engineers expect to complete the tunnel by the end of 2026.

The entire railway line should be operational by 2028. This project will likely boost economic development in the Ningbo metropolitan area and Zhoushan.

The Jintang tunnel will join other famous underground rail tunnels worldwide. It will surpass both the Channel Tunnel and Japan’s Seikan Tunnel in terms of train speed.
