Brazil’s Ibovespa Climbs 1.04% as Oil Surge Lifts Market, Foreign Outflows Continue
Brazilian stocks closed higher on Thursday as the Ibovespa index rose 1.04% to 129,650.03 points, according to data from B3 Brazilian Exchange.
The benchmark erased earlier weekly losses and registered a 1.54% gain for the shortened trading week. The market rallied despite ongoing trade tensions between the United States and its commercial partners.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones by 585 to 303, with 64 issues ending unchanged. Trading volumes reached approximately R$12 billion, below the year’s average of R$15 billion.
The Brazilian real strengthened against the US dollar, with the American currency falling 1.05% to R$5.8037. This movement helped boost investor confidence in Brazilian assets. The real has appreciated 1.14% against the dollar over the past week.
A strong recovery in oil prices provided significant support to the market. Petrobras shares climbed 2.50% after the state-owned company announced a diesel price reduction of 0.12 real per liter for distributors starting Friday.

Price Adjustments and Market Performance
The price adjustment follows recent declines in international crude oil prices. Technology firm LWSA SA led gains with a remarkable 15.51% increase.
Education company YDUQS Participacoes followed with a 10.90% jump. Real estate developer MRV Engenharia rounded out the top three performers with an 8.79% advance.
Pharmacy chain Raia Drogasil led declines with a 3.05% drop. Healthcare provider Hapvida fell 2.26%, while airline Azul retreated 2.24%. The CBOE Brazil ETF Volatility index increased 2.91% to 28.63, reflecting continued market uncertainty.
Foreign investment flows remained a concern for market participants. B3 data shows foreign investors recorded outflows in all ten trading sessions this month.
The year-to-date foreign investment balance dropped from R$10.6 billion at March’s end to just R$941 million by April 14. Market analysts attribute the foreign exodus to reduced predictability in the global macroeconomic outlook.
Eduardo Carlier from Azimut Brasil Wealth Management noted investors may be looking for regions less exposed to trade measures, especially those with competitive prices.
The Ibovespa has gained 7.79% since 2025 began but remains 5.74% below its all-time high of 137,469.27 points reached in August 2024. Trading Economics forecasts the index to trade around 125,000 points by June 2025.
It also predicts a potential decline to 117,290 points within twelve months. Brazilian markets will reopen on Monday, April 22, following the Good Friday holiday.
Investors will monitor upcoming economic indicators and developments in global trade negotiations to determine market direction.
