Brazilian Wind Blade Maker Aeris Faces $146 Million Q4 Loss Amid Industry Collapse

Brazilian wind turbine blade manufacturer Aeris Energy reported a staggering R$833 million ($146.1 million) loss in the fourth quarter of 2024, according to financial statements released Tuesday night.

The company’s annual losses reached R$934.1 million ($163.9 million), marking a dramatic deterioration from previous periods. The quarterly deficit stems primarily from a R$751 million ($131.8 million) impairment charge following terminated contracts with three major clients: Siemens Gamesa, Nordex, and Weg.

Revenue plummeted 42.5% year-over-year to R$211.4 million ($37.1 million) while annual revenue contracted 46.5% to R$1.51 billion ($264.9 million). Aeris CFO José Azevedo attributes these results to Brazil’s wind energy sector slowdown.

High capital costs, limited free market contracts, and low energy settlement prices have crippled the industry. The company has dismantled four production lines and deactivated three others in response to reduced demand.

The manufacturer now struggles with nearly doubled net debt of R$1.18 billion ($207 million) and a concerning 8.6x leverage ratio. Aeris secured a temporary payment suspension with debenture holders and will propose similar arrangements to bank creditors on March 28, 2025.

Aeris Shifts Focus to International Markets

Aeris has shifted focus toward international markets as domestic opportunities dwindle. Exports grew from negligible levels to 31.8% of fourth-quarter revenue. The company has also expanded its services and maintenance segment, which now represents 26% of revenue.

Previous acquisition talks with Chinese manufacturer Sinoma Blade collapsed, though Azevedo remains open to potential partnerships. “Everything depends on how much the investor is willing to pay,” he stated.

The crisis extends beyond Aeris, reflecting broader challenges in Brazil’s wind energy market. GE has exited the Brazilian market entirely, while Siemens Gamesa and other manufacturers have dramatically reduced operations.

Industry analysts expect this contraction to continue until 2026. Aeris hopes government policies and new energy auctions will eventually revitalize the sector. The Brazilian Wind Energy Association projects recovery might only begin in 2027.

Brazil currently ranks as the world’s sixth-largest wind energy producer with approximately 33 gigawatts of installed capacity. New installations dropped significantly in 2024, with only 76 new wind farms compared to 123 in 2023.

Aeris must now navigate debt restructuring while pursuing international opportunities to survive until the anticipated market recovery. The company’s Q4 EBITDA turned negative at R$1.6 million, though full-year EBITDA remained positive at R$138.8 million ($24.4 million).
