Brazilian Service Sector Experiences First Decline Since February 2024

The Brazilian service sector faced a setback in August 2024. The sector’s volume dropped by 0.4% compared to July. This decline marks the first decrease since February of the same year.

The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) released these findings in their Monthly Service Survey. Despite this monthly dip, the sector showed growth in other metrics. Compared to August 2023, the sector grew by 1.7%.

This represents the fifth consecutive positive result in this year-over-year comparison. The cumulative growth for 2024 reached 2.7% when measured against the same period in 2023.

The service sector currently stands 15.0% above pre-pandemic levels of February 2020. However, it remains 0.4% below its peak, which occurred in July 2024.

These figures highlight the sector’s overall resilience despite recent challenges. The August decline surprised analysts. The LSEG consensus had predicted a 0.2% monthly increase.

This discrepancy underscores the unpredictable nature of economic recovery. Only two of the five surveyed activities showed decreases in August.

Mixed Performance in Brazil’s Service Sector

Information and communication services experienced the most significant drop at 1.0%. This decline partially reversed the 3.7% gain accumulated over the previous two months.

Transportation services also fell by 0.4%, marking its second consecutive negative rate. On a positive note, other services grew by 1.4%. Services provided to families increased by 0.8%.

These gains helped offset some of the losses in other areas. Professional, administrative, and complementary services remained stable for the month. Tourism activities in Brazil remained unchanged in August compared to July.

However, this sector still sits 6.9% above pre-pandemic levels. Regionally, 11 out of 17 surveyed locations reported declines in tourism. São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro saw the most significant drops.

The transportation sector faced challenges in August. Passenger transport volume fell by 0.8%, following a 2.4% decline in July. This segment now sits 1.6% below pre-pandemic levels.

Cargo transport volume remained stable but is still 7.7% below its peak from August 2023. These figures paint a complex picture of Brazil’s service sector.

While some areas show resilience, others face ongoing challenges. The coming months will be crucial in determining the sector’s overall trajectory for the remainder of 2024.
