Russia emerges as the world’s leading importer of Chinese cars
Russia has emerged as the world’s largest importer of Chinese cars, according to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) and the official Global Times newspaper.
In the first five months of 2023, Russia imported approximately 287,000 Chinese cars, surpassing other countries in import volume.
The growing presence of Chinese automakers in Russia can be attributed to the exit of Western car brands from the market, creating a niche that Chinese companies have successfully filled.
Additionally, Chinese vehicles have become increasingly competitive, further driving the rise in imports.

Cui Dongshu, the secretary general of the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), highlighted these factors as contributing to the surge in Chinese car imports.
In comparison to other countries, Russia’s import volume of Chinese cars significantly exceeds that of Mexico and Belgium, which rank second and third, respectively, in terms of import quantity.
However, when it comes to electric vehicles, Russia does not feature among the top three importers.
China exported 673,000 electric vehicles worldwide between January and May, with Belgium, the United Kingdom, and Thailand being the main destinations.
Estimates from the Russian bank Otkritie, as reported by Xinhua news agency, indicate that Chinese car sales in Russia could reach between 380,000 and 400,000 units by the end of this year.
Chinese automakers have established around 1,500 dealerships in Russia, with popular brands such as Tiggo, Haval, and Geely gaining significant traction in the market.
In May, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce introduced additional measures to promote the export of vehicles to other countries, leveraging the current weakness of the yuan against other currencies.
This initiative aims to make Chinese products more affordable for overseas buyers, further boosting exports.
