Poland elections: a tense landscape with many questions

Poland’s general election is set for October 15th, where the outcome will decide if the conservative Law and Justice party, governing since 2015, can sustain its fragile majority.

Their strategy involves the rollout of contentious new laws and a simultaneous referendum.

Recent polls suggest 33.7% support for Law and Justice, led by Jaroslaw Kaczynski, and 29.4% for the liberal Civic Platform of Donald Tusk.

Kaczynski’s party promotes a nationalist agenda, state economic intervention, and policies aligned with the Church.

In contrast, Tusk seeks harmony with European partners, supports a wholly liberal economy, and advocates for topics like abortion rights.

A growing trend in elections sees the youth increasingly rallying behind conservative parties prioritizing national sovereignty.

Roughly a third of the 1.5 million first-time voters lean towards Confederation, a party that appeals to the younger generation disillusioned with mainstream politics.

Earlier this year, the ruling party amended the electoral law, expanding voting centers in rural areas – their stronghold, and offering free transport on election day for the elderly, a demographic largely supporting Law and Justice.

A controversial law initiated in May aimed to investigate alleged Russian influence on prior administrations.

This law, informally termed “lex Tusk”, appeared to target the opposition party.

However, it underwent modifications following widespread protests and international concerns.

The ruling party released content challenging opposition-led demonstrations and aired a documentary series on state television spotlighting Tusk’s governance from 2007-2015.

Accusations of alleged content manipulation in these productions have arisen.

In a move to purportedly “save costs”, a referendum featuring four questions will coincide with the general election.

Two questions have been revealed so far, referencing criticisms previously leveled by Law and Justice at past Tusk administrations.

Another anticipated question relates to Brussels-led forced immigrant relocation, which Kaczynski believes threatens Poland’s sovereignty.

The European Union’s stipulation requiring Poland to pay 20,000 euros for each declined immigrant fails to recognize that Poland has previously accommodated 2.2 million refugees from Ukraine.

The leader of Law and Justice views this as a clear instance of discrimination against the country.
