China’s Tiangong space station is emerging as a global center for scientific collaboration

China’s Tiangong space station has commenced hosting scientific experiments from researchers worldwide, showcasing Beijing’s efforts to engage the global scientific community.

In a recent United Nations-hosted online symposium, China’s Manned Space Agency project office announced the transportation of the first experimental equipment for joint projects with the United Nations to Tiangong on May 10.

Among the experiments, University of Tokyo associate professor Shinji Nakaya will study the behavior of flames in a low-gravity environment.

Nakaya aims to compare their characteristics with ground-based measurements by observing small flames generated from burning methane.

Nakaya was approached by an acquaintance at Beijing’s Tsinghua University and subsequently cleared of any security concerns by the University of Tokyo and Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

Since 2018, the U.N. and China have collaborated in recruiting researchers for experiments on Tiangong.

China covers the space launch expenses, while researchers are responsible for developing experiment equipment and transporting it to China.

Out of 42 applications in 2019, nine projects involving 17 countries and 23 institutes were selected, encompassing diverse fields such as disease studies, earth observation, and solar cell development.

The construction of Tiangong, completed in November 2022, provides additional research opportunities beyond the International Space Station (ISS).

China’s independent space station endeavor stems partly from the Wolf Amendment in a U.S. appropriations bill of 2011, which bars NASA from cooperating with China.

Nakaya noted that while the ISS prioritizes industrial applications, Tiangong allows for more basic research, including combustion physics.
