Russia and China hail Venezuela’s intention to join the BRICS

The Government of China applauded Venezuela’s willingness to join the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa).

This intention of Venezuela is evidence of the group’s growing global authority, said the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry for Latin America, Alexandr Schetinin.

“We welcome the early accession of as many partisan partners as possible to the large BRICS family,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning told Sputnik.

“The statement by [Venezuelan President Nicolas] Maduro reflects the growing authority that the BRICS are gaining in the current international situation because of their view of what is happening, their assessment, their model of cooperation of equals without sanctions or pressure of any kind,” Schetinin told Sputnik commenting on Venezuela’s intention to join the BRICS.

On May 29, Maduro, in a meeting with his Brazilian peer, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, declared that Venezuela aspired to join the BRICS in a “modest” way to follow the construction of the new architecture and the new world geopolitics.

Schetinin indicated that the BRICS are currently debating the criteria for the enlargement of the group.

“When the corresponding agreements are adopted, concrete candidacies will be analyzed. As we understand, the president of Venezuela stressed that his country was also on the list of candidates. We highly value this,” he remarked.

The BRICS today account for more than 20% of the global gross domestic product (GDP) and 42% of the world’s population.
