Brazil: Lula da Silva wants a global coalition against patriotism and Christian discourse

During an interview on Rede TV, when answering about how he intends to “combat” alleged fake news in his government, Lula da Silva said he is committed to creating a global coalition that will “build a narrative” against the patriotic and Christian “discourse.”

“What is the discourse of the right around the world? Beloved homeland, proper behavior, and religion. So what do we have to build? […] This I have been making proposals… I have spoken with the (German) chancellor, Olaf Scholz, (Emmanuel) Macron, and I will speak with all the leaders.”

“The progressive and democratic sectors of society need to prepare themselves to build a narrative to dismantle this backward, xenophobic discourse that leads nowhere,” said Lula da Silva last Thursday (Feb. 2).

When asked about the method of building the narrative by the militant journalist Kennedy Alencar, the president said that he didn’t know how to do it, but “it has to be something technically prepared.”

“Let’s try to establish a discussion in Brazilian society because we have to hold the companies that foment…” said Lula when interrupted with another question: “How can we do this without censoring?” asked the interviewer.

“I don’t… You don’t need to censor. If society participates and finds a common denominator that the company must stop something, you can’t publish it there because it is a lie. If it’s a lie, it can’t be published,” Lula answered.

The Brazilian presidential candidate also said he believes in a model of “world regulation” of the press and guaranteed that he will deal with the issue at a meeting with the president of the United States, Joe Biden, next Friday (Feb. 10).

Lula said it is not enough to defeat opponents in elections; it is necessary to “defeat” those who believe in them.

“Biden defeated Trump, but he didn’t defeat the extreme right. Here in Brazil, we defeated Bolsonaro, but it’s still necessary to defeat Bolsonarism,” Lula said, calling “stelionists” those who swear at leftist politicians or journalists.
