Brazil is the country with the second-highest number of deaths, behind only the United States, which registers 575,551 deaths. And in the number of cases, the country ranks third, behind the United States and India, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

High number of deaths

After Brazil hit the mark of 400,000 deaths by Covid-19, an infectologist and researcher from Fiocruz, Julio Croda, estimates that the situation in the country will continue to be high in deaths and cases for the next three months.

In an interview, he said that the winter period is more favorable for respiratory viruses: “We will still have a complicated June, July, and August. In the winter season, viruses circulate more intensely, especially in the south and southeast, which are the most populated regions.”

For the first time in history, Southeastern Brazil had a month with more deaths than births, according to data from the National Association of Registrars of Natural Persons (Arpen-Brazil). With about 85 million inhabitants, the region registered, through Friday, April 30, 81,525 deaths and 76,508 births.

The states of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo led the negative indicator in the southeast region, totaling 5,580 more deaths than births. With only 41 more births than deaths, Minas Gerais is experiencing a similar phenomenon for the first time.
