Brazil and Uruguay are leaders in cybersecurity

“Brazil, together with Uruguay, the United States, and Canada are the leaders in the region. According to international indices, they are the four countries that have advanced the most in cybersecurity,” he said.

Likewise, he explained that although Central America and the Caribbean are not as advanced, “significant steps have been taken to advance considerably” in this matter.

“You can see that most states are taking measures to strengthen cybersecurity,” said Moliné, who explained that some are the approval of legislation against cybercrime, the planning of national strategies, and investment.

For the expert, the risks currently exist for all the actors in one way or another in cyberspace so that they can attack not only individuals but also companies and governments.

As an example, he pointed out that if a cybersecurity incident were to cause a city’s energy service to be cut off, this would cause “catastrophic effects”.

“The smooth running of society can be affected by a cyber incident. That is one of the most important risks,” he said.

Finally, Moliné stressed that one could not think of having e-commerce, government services, or electronic banking without thinking about their security.
