Argentina Unveils High-Power Supercomputer Clementina XXI

Argentina’s Defense Minister, Jorge Taiana, recently unveiled Clementina XXI, a supercomputer that ranks among the world’s top 100.

This milestone makes Argentina one of two South American countries with such advanced computational resources.

A collaboration between the Ministry of Science, the Defense Ministry, the National Weather Service (SMN), and the National Research Council (Conicet) made this possible.

Science Minister Daniel Filmus praised Argentina’s knack for scientific innovation even in challenging circumstances.

Clementina XXI will be open for use by researchers, who can submit project proposals for computational needs.

An expert committee will allocate the necessary time, while 10% of its operations are earmarked for the SMN.

In terms of performance, the new machine surpasses its predecessor, Huayra Muyu, by 40 times.

The entire venture cost approximately $6.5 million, with Lenovo winning the contract for almost $5 million.

The remaining funds covered the installation needs, including optimal temperature and humidity conditions.

On the technical front, Clementina XXI boasts 15.39 PFLOPs of computational power and includes 296 Intel accelerators.

It also has a storage capacity of 1.66 petabytes and an internal network speed of 400 gigabytes per second.

The system uses direct water cooling and consumes 233 KW of energy.
