World currencies against the dollar: Uruguay and Brazil are the best and Argentina is penultimate

The 2022 World Cup in Qatar means that, for a month, almost everything has the shape of a ball.

In one of the many parallels that arise in times of the soccer World Cup, the positioning of the countries participating in the tournament before different economic indicators is quite frequent.

On that path, when taking the performance of local currencies against the dollar in 2022, it is found that four Latin American countries such as Uruguay, Brazil, Costa Rica and Mexico are at the top of the ranking among the 32 that compete in the Middle East. On the other hand, Argentina is in the penultimate position.

The Uruguayan peso is the one that had the best performance against the dollar so far in 2022 among the currencies of the 32 countries that dispute the World Cup in Qatar, based on the currency ranking prepared by Bloomberg. According to this indicator, with closed data on the afternoon of Monday 21, the Uruguayan peso appreciated 12.76% against the US currency.

Among the countries that compete in the World Cup, the Brazilian real is in second place in the ranking. Brazil’s currency advanced 6.97% through Monday. Meanwhile, the Costa Rican cólon was in third place with 5.27% and the Mexican peso was in fourth position with 4.81%.

At the other end of the table is the Argentine peso, which so far this year has fallen 36.87% against the dollar, and is the penultimate currency with the worst performance when counting those classified for the World Cup, only ahead of the sedhi of Ghana, which lost 56% against the dollar in 2022. Overall, the Argentine peso is in 146th place.

Among Latin American competitors, the caveat is that Ecuador is dollarized.

THE OVERALL TABLE

In the general count of countries that make up the ranking prepared by Bloomberg, Uruguay is located fifth behind the Russian ruble and the currencies of Armenia, Afghanistan and Georgia.

But none of these countries competes in Qatar 2022, so the Uruguayan peso remains at the top of the podium among those classified. For its part, the Brazilian real is ninth in the general table, behind the aforementioned, the somoni of Tajikistan, the Angolan kwanza and the Guinean franc. The Costa Rican colón is in the top 10.

The Mexican peso, meanwhile, is ranked 12th overall. Between that currency and the Brazilian real, according to the performance indicator against the dollar, are those of Costa Rica and the Dominican peso. Meanwhile, in 13th place is the Peruvian sun, whose team was eliminated from Qatar 2022 in the playoff on penalties against Australia.
