Venezuela and Russia seal ‘fifth freedom’ agreement for their airlines

The Russian Federal Air Transport Agency said that Russian and Venezuelan aviation authorities agreed to grant their airlines the right to fly from the Fifth Freedom of the Air to strengthen bilateral cooperation in air communications.

Russian airlines can operate flights on the Moscow-Varadero-Porlamar route and vice versa. In turn, flights of Venezuelan airlines will be able to cover the Caracas-Havana-Moscow route and vice versa.

The agreement of the aeronautical authorities is valid until the end of the summer 2024 IATA (International Air Transport Association) season.

This means that flights operated under the agreement can be carried out until the end of October 2024.

During the 2022/2023 IATA winter season, flights between the countries are operated by Nordwind and Conviasa airlines.

WHAT IS THE FIFTH FREEDOM OF THE AIR?

Freedom of airspace is a set of civil aviation rules that grant airlines of one country the right to enter another country’s airspace under certain conditions.

The fifth degree of freedom of the air is a right concerning scheduled air transport granted by one State to another, whereby the designated carrier has the right to land and embark passengers, mail, and cargo from or to a third State in the territory of the partner country by agreement.
