Key Facts
- —The airport Tulum International Airport (TQO), officially Felipe Carrillo Puerto, opened in December 2023 on Mexico’s Caribbean coast. Its 2026 traffic is down by about a third.
- —US nonstops As of October 2026, American flies from Miami and Dallas/Fort Worth, Delta from Atlanta and United from Houston.
- —Winter extra United adds Newark to Tulum twice a week from 17 December 2026 to 24 January 2027, per Mexico’s tourism ministry.
- —Fares American’s Tulum fare page, checked on 12 October 2026, showed lowest economy round trips from US$366 to US$681.
- —Cancún option Cancún (CUN) handled 1.61 million passengers in September 2026, per operator ASUR. It is about two hours from Tulum by road.
- —Entry US citizens need a valid passport and can stay up to 180 days as visitors, per Mexico’s migration institute (INM).
Tulum flights from the United States now come down to three US airlines and four hub cities, after a year of cuts. That matters for anyone booking the Riviera Maya this winter.
Fewer nonstops can mean higher fares, so Cancún, two hours up the coast, is often the practical alternative.
Tulum Flights From the US: Who Flies Nonstop
Tulum International Airport, coded TQO and officially named Felipe Carrillo Puerto, opened in December 2023. It lies about half an hour’s drive south of downtown Tulum, off Federal Highway 307.
It is run by Grupo Mundo Maya, a state-owned company, and sits beside a station of the Tren Maya railway.
As of October 2026, three US carriers fly to Tulum all year. That is according to the Mexican business outlet El CEO and the local site Tulum Times.
The airport operator says they operate normally.
- American Airlines, based in Fort Worth, Texas, flies from its hubs at Miami (MIA) and Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW).
- Delta Air Lines, based in Atlanta, flies from Atlanta (ATL). In August 2025 Delta said it would keep daily Atlanta service after dropping planned Detroit and Minneapolis flights.
- United Airlines, based in Chicago, flies from its Houston hub (IAH).
- United seasonal: Newark (EWR) to Tulum returns twice a week, on Thursdays and Sundays, from 17 December 2026 to 24 January 2027.
The Newark service is the only US addition in the 2026-27 winter plan announced by Mexico’s tourism ministry (Sectur). The same plan brings back Canadian flights from late October.
Air Canada, WestJet and Air Transat fly from Montreal, Toronto, Calgary and Quebec City.
Travellers from other US cities connect through one of these hubs. Flights from Chicago, New York, Los Angeles or Boston therefore involve a change of plane, usually in Miami, Dallas, Atlanta or Houston.

Why So Many Airlines Left Tulum
Tulum opened with a long list of US routes, but many did not last. By December 2024 United had dropped Los Angeles and made Chicago and Newark seasonal, while American was ending Charlotte.
JetBlue turned its New York flight into a winter-only route, and Spirit’s planned Florida routes never launched.
The Mexican carriers have now gone too. Aeroméxico, the national flag carrier, flew its last Tulum service on Wednesday 30 September 2026.
It called the move a temporary suspension for market reasons. Volaris, a Mexican low-cost airline, will end its Tulum flights on 7 January 2027 and said it would stop selling them.
Traffic explains the retreat. The airport handled 583,408 passengers from January to August 2026, down 33.7 percent from 880,344 a year earlier, El CEO reported.
Hotels felt it too: beachfront occupancy fell below 20 percent by mid-September, according to Tulum Hotel Association data.
The operator expects a rebound in the high season. Grupo Mundo Maya projects international operations rising from 552 to 1,064 between November 2026 and March 2027, Uno TV reported.
That is an increase of about 93 percent.
What a Ticket to Tulum Costs
No public body publishes an average fare for Tulum routes. The clearest dated figures come from the airlines themselves.
American Airlines’ Tulum fare page, checked on 12 October 2026, listed its lowest economy round trips found within the previous 24 hours.
- Miami to Tulum: from US$556 round trip, for 17 to 24 December 2026.
- Dallas/Fort Worth to Tulum: from US$668, for 4 to 11 December 2026, and US$623 for late January 2027.
- Atlanta to Tulum: from US$447, for 4 to 11 December 2026.
- Houston Hobby to Tulum: from US$368, for 28 November to 5 December 2026.
- New York to Tulum: from US$412, for 28 November to 5 December 2026.
- Chicago and Los Angeles to Tulum: from US$458 each.
Across the 20 featured routes, the lowest fares ranged from US$366 to US$681 and averaged about US$492. Some include a connection or Basic Economy, which restricts bags and seat choice.
Prices change daily, so treat them as a guide.
In that snapshot, the cheapest dates fell in late November and early January. The Newark service runs for only about six weeks, so seats on it may be limited.
Cancún as the Alternative
Cancún International Airport (CUN) is the region’s main gateway and has far more flights and airlines. It is run by ASUR, a listed Mexican airport group.
Cancún handled 1,607,088 passengers in September 2026, of whom 848,775 were international, ASUR reported on Wednesday 7 October 2026.
That was 8.6 percent fewer than in September 2025, and international traffic fell 11.8 percent. The whole Mexican Caribbean is in a slower year, not only Tulum.
Even so, Cancún still offers nonstops from many more US cities than Tulum.
The trade-off is distance. Cancún airport is about two hours from Tulum by road, against roughly half an hour from TQO to downtown Tulum.
A cheaper Cancún fare can disappear once the transfer is added, especially for families or late arrivals.

Getting From Tulum Airport to Town and the Hotel Zone
The exchange rate used in this guide is the Bank of Mexico’s FIX rate of 18.4163 pesos per US dollar on Friday 9 October 2026. Prices below are dated and may change.
- ADO bus: Mexico’s main intercity coach company runs from the terminal to downtown Tulum. The fare was MXN 175 (about US$10) when ADO announced the route in January 2024, and no newer fare table has been published.
- Taxi: airport taxis have no meter and no published tariff. Estimates cited by Tulum Times in September 2026 put the official airport taxi at about US$40 to US$100. Agree the full price in pesos before loading bags.
- Shared shuttle: about US$20 to US$30 per person, per operator quotes cited by Tulum Times. Private transfers booked ahead ran about US$55 to US$110 per vehicle.
- Rental car: about US$22 to US$50 a day before Mexican liability insurance, which is compulsory and can raise the total sharply.
- Tren Maya: the state railway’s Tulum Aeropuerto station serves the airport. Fares are sold at the station or on the official site.
The hotel zone runs along the beach road, while downtown sits on the main highway. Ask for the price to your exact hotel, not just to Tulum.
Many hotels also arrange pick-ups.

Getting From Cancún Airport to Tulum
El Heraldo de México, a national daily, compared the main options on 5 October 2026. All four leave from Cancún airport.
- ADO bus: MXN 455 (about US$25) per person and about two and a half hours. Buses leave every one to two hours from terminals 2, 3 and 4.
- Tren Maya: MXN 351 (about US$19) per person plus MXN 35 (about US$2) for the connecting bus to the station. The train takes about one hour and 40 minutes.
- Taxi: about MXN 3,000 (about US$163), roughly two hours depending on traffic.
- Rental car: about MXN 500 to 700 (about US$27 to US$38) a day, collected and returned in the terminals.
The bus is the simplest choice for most travellers with luggage. The train is cheaper but needs a short bus ride to the station first.
Entry Rules for US Citizens
US citizens do not need a visa for tourist trips to Mexico. They need a valid passport, and an immigration officer sets the length of stay.
It can run up to 180 days, Mexico’s National Migration Institute (INM) says.
Officers may ask where you will stay, how long, why you are visiting and how you will leave. Keep your hotel booking and return ticket to hand.
The INM also offers a digital version of the FMM entry form.
Quintana Roo, the state that includes Tulum and Cancún, charges foreign visitors a tourist tax called Visitax. It is set at 2.5 times Mexico’s UMA reference unit, roughly MXN 293 (about US$16) per person at the 2026 value.
Pay only on the official visitax.gob.mx portal to avoid mark-ups.
The US State Department rates Quintana Roo “Exercise Increased Caution” because of crime. It advises extra care after dark in Cancún, Playa del Carmen and Tulum.
What It Means for US Readers
Travellers: if you live near Miami, Dallas, Atlanta or Houston, Tulum is the quicker airport. From elsewhere, compare a one-stop Tulum ticket with a nonstop to Cancún plus the bus or train.
Deal hunters: weak hotel occupancy may mean more choice of rooms this winter. Airfares, though, depend on seats, and fewer flights can push them up.
Investors: ASUR, which owns Cancún airport, trades in New York. Its September figures show Mexican Caribbean demand still falling. Tulum airport is state-owned, so there is no listed stock tied to it.

What Is Not Known
No official average fare exists for Tulum routes, so the figures above are lowest published fares on one airline’s site. Airlines have not said whether any US route will return beyond the Newark season.
Aeroméxico calls its exit temporary but has given no return date. It is also unclear whether other Mexican airlines will keep domestic Tulum flights, which affects connections through Mexico City.
Airport taxi rates are not published, and no official tariff card was available as of October 2026. Ground transport prices quoted here come from local reporting, not from a regulator.
