Third day of the Homeless Workers Movement’s camp in front of the São Paulo City Hall

Camping of the Homeless Workers Movement (MTST) in front of the São Paulo City Hall reaches its third day this Thursday (15).

Linked to the far-left congressman Guilherme Boulos (Psol-SP), the MTST demands that Mayor Ricardo Nunes (MDB) fulfill an alleged agreement about which Nunes claims ignorance.

The activists say that Nunes promised the Movement that he would build affordable housing in an area invaded by the group.

The site is near the Guarapiranga dam and is considered an environmentally protected area.

During the invasion in 2013, the group was led by Boulos.

According to the mayor, the Secretary of Green and Environment suggested expropriation to turn the site into a park and reforest the vegetation.

“That area, where they wanted me to expropriate it and give it to them, is of interest to the city, to everyone, so that we can preserve the environment.”

“There is no undone agreement; I didn’t make any agreement. We have the definition of a valid public policy, to do the housing, but not in the place where it was invaded”, said Nunes when he complained of a “political bias” in the claim.

“It seems like something much more orchestrated than, eventually, a community pleading its right to housing,” he added.

In a note, the City Hall also informed that the Housing, Green, and Environment Secretaries and Civil House received the Movement’s leaders.

On Twitter, the MTST hinted that it does not predict withdrawal from the camp.

“Third day of camping in front of the São Paulo City Hall, and no one is tired”.
