The Unexpectedly Moderate Reign of Italy’s Giorgia Meloni

A year ago, Giorgia Meloni became Italy’s Prime Minister, with many anticipating her to introduce radical changes.

Though she led a right-wing party widely branded as far-right and ultra-extreme, her actions have been moderate.

When the world labels someone as “far-right,” it often reflects misrepresentation rather than reality, bordering on propaganda.

At the start, mainstream analysts predicted a shift to radical policies. Instead, Meloni chose a balanced foreign policy.

She has worked well with the European Union. She also found common ground with most EU nations, even when disagreements arose.

For example, France and Germany disagreed with Italy on handling North African migrants. Despite this, she maintained a working relationship with both countries.

She also supports Ukraine against Russia’s aggression. U.S. President Joe Biden praised her for this stance.

Meloni aims to exit China’s Belt and Road Initiative soon. Italy was the only G7 country to join in 2019. This shows a move away from China’s influence.

Supports Traditional Family Values

On domestic issues, she has lowered taxes. She also supports traditional family values. As a result, her party, Brothers of Italy, holds a 28% approval rating.

Luigi Scazzieri, a researcher, notes her success in balancing her past radical image with a moderate present.

Brothers of Italy was a small party until recently. It gained 26% of votes in the 2022 elections.

Meloni’s government partners with Matteo Salvini’s League party and the conservative Forza Italia.

The government has made some controversial choices. For instance, it doesn’t allow local authorities to recognize children of same-sex couples.

This reflects Meloni’s stance on traditional family structures.

On the economic front, growth has slowed down. Italy now predicts a GDP growth of just 0.8% for 2023 and 1.2% for 2024. The public deficit is also expected to go up.

Regarding immigration, more migrants have arrived despite efforts to curb this trend. Numbers are up 85% compared to last year.

Meloni made agreements to limit migration from Tunisia and manage asylum requests. Yet, immigration still concerns many voters.

As the 2024 European elections approach, Meloni faces a choice. She must prove her moderate approach works. Otherwise, she might need to adopt a tougher stance.
