Tesla Recalls All 46,000 Cybertrucks Due to Detaching Steel Panels

Tesla announced a full recall of approximately 46,000 Cybertrucks sold in the United States since the vehicle’s launch in November 2023.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) identified a significant safety issue with exterior steel trim panels that can detach while driving. The problem stems from stainless steel body panels secured with adhesive susceptible to environmental damage.

This “cant rail” trim piece can separate from the vehicle during motion, creating hazards for other drivers. Tesla discovered the issue in January through warranty claims monitoring and has identified 151 related repair requests.

Tesla will replace the problematic panels free of charge using different structural adhesive and additional mechanical fasteners. The company plans to mail owner notification letters by May 19, though a permanent production line fix remains pending.

This marks the eighth recall for the futuristic pickup truck within its first 16 months on the market. Previous recalls addressed various issues including stuck accelerator pedals, malfunctioning windshield wipers, and delayed rearview camera displays.

The Cybertruck’s troubles extend beyond official recalls. Several viral videos have challenged Elon Musk’s durability claims about the vehicle. YouTube channel WhistlinDiesel posted footage showing a Cybertruck breaking in half during a towing test, accumulating over 31 million views.

Tesla Faces Mounting Challenges Over Cybertruck Performance

Musk previously touted the Cybertruck as “apocalypse-level safe” and extremely resistant. Reality has proven different, with owners reporting problems in off-road conditions. One incident in Ventura, California, saw a Cybertruck sink when owners attempted to test Musk’s claim about its boat-like capabilities.

Tesla’s stock has fallen over 40% since the beginning of 2025, reflecting broader concerns about the company’s flagship truck. During an October 2024 earnings call, Musk admitted production difficulties, stating “we dug our own grave with the Cybertruck.”

The vehicle remains unavailable in Europe due to safety standards non-compliance. European regulators cite pedestrian safety concerns related to the truck’s angular design and sharp edges.

Despite these challenges, Tesla continues addressing issues while maintaining the Cybertruck represents a revolutionary approach to electric truck design. Owners await permanent solutions to the mounting quality concerns.
