RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The resumption of international travel continues to yield good results for Brazil. According to data from the Central Bank, foreign tourist spending in the country reached US$781 million between January and February, an increase of 63% compared to the same two-month period in 2021 (R$480 million). According to the Federal Police’s International Traffic System, more than 530,000 travelers from other countries came to Brazil in the first two months of this year.

Focusing on attracting international tourists, Decree No. 9,731 of March 16, 2019, signed by President Jair Bolsonaro, abolished visa requirements for Australian, Canadian, Japanese, and US American tourists. The ease of entry into Brazil was the theme of a campaign recently conducted by the Brazilian International Tourism Promotion Agency (Embratur) in the United States. Entitled “Brazil is visa-free. Come visit!”, the action generated US$5.7 million in sales to the country, attracting more than 16,000 passengers from the USA and 17,500 overnight stays sold.

By the end of 2022, Embratur has scheduled at least four more advertising campaigns in the United States, Europe, and Latin America. Embratur must also participate in 14 major trade fairs of the segment abroad and take advantage of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar to organize promotional activities.

VISIBILITY

Data that reflect the perception of foreigners about Brazil reinforce the national potential in the post-Covid-19 health crisis period. According to a report from US News & World Report, Brazil is the seventh-best nation for tourists traveling alone, among a total of 78 locations. The same survey, carried out with 17,000 people spread around the globe, also points to Brazil as the number one global destination in the adventure category.

OPTIMISM

The good perspectives of Brazilian tourism are corroborated by numbers from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics. According to IBGE, the Tourist Activity Index in the country accumulates a 29% increase in the first two months of this year compared to the same period in 2021. The highlights are the sectors of passenger air transport, hotels, car rental, restaurants, and collective passenger road transport.
