Serena’s Q3 Profit Dips Amid Energy Sector Challenges

Serena, a prominent player in the energy sector, reported a profit of R$ 37.5 million ($6.6 million) for the third quarter of 2024. This figure represents a significant 63% decrease compared to the same period last year.

Despite the profit decline, the company’s revenue showed growth, reaching R$ 1.06 billion ($190 million), a 22% increase year-over-year.

The company’s EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization) stood at R$ 504.2 million ($90 million).

This marks a 14% growth compared to the previous year. The adjusted EBITDA remained stable at R$ 491 million ($88 million) when compared to the third quarter of 2023.

Serena, formerly known as Ômega Energia, acknowledged that its results fell short of expectations. Several factors contributed to this underperformance.

These included weaker resources, delays in distributor connections, lower energy prices, and forced reductions in generation (curtailment).

Despite these challenges, Serena’s energy production saw an increase. In the third quarter, production reached 3.04 gigawatt-hours (GWh), a 19% rise year-over-year.

Serena’s Financial and Operational Highlights

The company’s operational installed capacity also grew, reaching 2.76 megawatts (MW), a 27% increase over the same period.

The company’s financial position showed mixed results. Serena‘s net debt rose to R$ 8.72 billion ($1.53 billion) by the end of September, a 6% increase year-over-year.

However, its cash position improved significantly, growing by 81% to R$ 1.81 billion ($317 million) in the same period. Serena’s financial result was negative, standing at R$ 248.2 million ($43 million), a 28% increase in losses.

Despite these challenges, the company remains optimistic about its future prospects. Serena expressed confidence in the fundamentals of the renewables segment and its positioning in both the United States and Brazil.

The company’s entry into the U.S. market has helped stabilize revenues, according to Serena. This move reflects the company’s strategy to diversify its operations and mitigate risks associated with market fluctuations in a single country.

Serena has maintained its targets for the year, which were last updated in August. These include an adjusted EBITDA between R$ 1.72 billion ($301 million) and R$ 1.92 billion ($336 million), with a midpoint target of R$ 1.82 billion ($319 million).

The energy sector continues to face various challenges, including market volatility and regulatory changes. Serena’s performance reflects these industry-wide issues.

However, the company’s focus on renewable energy and strategic expansion suggests a long-term vision for sustainable growth.
