Saudi-Ukraine Peace Summit Paves Way for Critical U.S. Talks

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy discussed establishing a “sustainable, fair, and comprehensive” peace in Ukraine.

The two leaders met at Al-Salam Palace in Jeddah on March 10, according to a joint statement released by the Saudi Press Agency. Crown Prince Mohammed expressed hope for a diplomatic resolution respecting Ukraine’s sovereignty and international borders.

Saudi Arabia has emerged as a key mediator in the Russia-Ukraine conflict since 2022, facilitating prisoner exchanges and hosting peace-related meetings. The leaders agreed to strengthen economic cooperation in energy, food industries, and infrastructure sectors.

Bilateral trade between Saudi Arabia and Ukraine grew by 9% in 2024, reaching $368 million. Both countries welcomed the re-establishment of the Saudi-Ukrainian Joint Business Council.

Saudi Arabia committed $500 million to Ukraine‘s recovery efforts and actively encourages investment despite the ongoing war. Saudi company SALIC purchased 12.6% of Ukrainian agroholding MHP in September 2024, demonstrating growing business ties.

US-Ukraine Diplomatic Talks in Jeddah

This diplomatic engagement preceded crucial talks between Ukrainian and American officials on March 11 in Jeddah. Secretary of State Marco Rubio led the US delegation for their first formal meeting since a contentious Oval Office confrontation last month.

Trump suspended military aid and intelligence sharing after that White House dispute. Rubio stated Ukraine must show willingness to make “difficult decisions” toward peace, including potential territorial concessions.

Ukraine proposed a partial ceasefire focusing on air and sea operations while the US pushes for a comprehensive settlement. Andriy Yermak, Zelenskyy’s chief of staff, expressed openness to “constructive and friendly” discussions while emphasizing the importance of security guarantees.

Talks occurred amid escalating violence, with both countries launching significant drone strikes. The outcome could determine whether the US resumes critical military support to Ukraine and shape the path toward ending Europe’s deadliest conflict in decades.
