Brazil’s sanitation giant Sabesp’s (SBSP3) privatization drive shattered records with an institutional demand hitting R$187 billion ($34.31 billion).

This landmark event, widely reported by local media, signals robust investor confidence.

A notable R$7 billion ($1.28 billion) order, the largest single investment seen in Brazil’s markets, set this transaction apart.

Meanwhile, Equatorial (EQTL3) invested R$6.8 billion ($1.2 billion) for a 15% stake, surpassing Rede D’Or’s (RDOR3) previous top order of R$2.5 billion ($455,321).

In total, 309 orders were placed, marking the third-highest count on record.

Projected to generate R$14.8 billion ($2.1 billion), the offering priced shares at R$67 each, the cap set by Equatorial, now a key shareholder.

Post-sale, the funds—minus bank fees—will bolster São Paulo’s treasury. The state plans to slash its Sabesp ownership from 50.3% to 18%.

This privatization ranks as one of the five largest globally in 2024 and stands as a historic first in the sanitation and utilities sector.

The order book, bursting at 12.7 times the offered amount, saw about 53% of the bids from foreign investors, contributing a significant R$96.5 billion ($17.7 billion).

Sabesp’s R$187 billion institutional demand soared past Petrobras’s (PETR4) 2010 record of R$61 billion ($11.2 billion). The enthusiasm drew funds focused on infrastructure, ESG, water, and utilities.

Closing the order book on Wednesday, banks commenced allocations on Thursday, distributing shares to engaged institutional investors.

They will finalize it next Monday, followed by a ceremonial event at B3 on Tuesday.

It will host notables such as São Paulo Governor Tarcísio de Freitas and Environment, Infrastructure, and Logistics Secretary Natalia Resende.

This event underscores the strategic shift in managing Brazil’s key utilities, impacting millions and reflecting broader economic shifts.
