Riots in Santiago de Chile on the third anniversary of October 18

On Tuesday, October 18, protests and clashes between protesters and police were recorded in Santiago de Chile on the third anniversary of the revolts that, on October 18, 2019, left destruction in several cities of Chile.

In the central Baquedano square – the epicenter of the revolt three years ago, where violent clashes with police, arson, and looting were recorded – small groups gathered during the day to remember the victims.

In the surrounding areas, groups of hooded people threw stones, and the police responded with gas and water jets. In other points of the capital, there were incendiary barricades and traffic detours, while in other cities of the country, there were also some demonstrations.

In a message earlier in the day from La Moneda palace, leftist president Gabriel Boric, who at the time of the outbreak was a deputy and supported the violent demonstrations, said that three years after the revolt, there is a new opportunity to “build the foundations of a just and less unequal society”.

“The social outburst expressed and brought a lot of pain and has left enormous after-effects. We will not allow it to be in vain; we cannot be the same as a society after this experience; we cannot make the same mistakes or remain cornered in our comfortable sidewalks,” he said.
