Peruvian President welcomes OAS decision to send delegation to the country to analyze democratic situation

The President of Peru, Pedro Castillo, greeted on Thursday the Organization of American States (OAS) decision to form a high-level group to visit the Andean country and make an “analysis” of the tense political situation it is going through.

“We salute all the OAS member countries that accepted our request for the application of the Inter-American Democratic Charter, to preserve the democratic institutionality and legitimate exercise of power in our country”, said the President on his Twitter account.

Likewise, the head of State said he would “welcome” the mission that the multilateral organization will soon send while guaranteeing that his administration is willing to dialogue with all the powers of the State, political forces, and social organizations.

Castillo’s pronouncement came shortly after the OAS Permanent Council held an extraordinary session to analyze his request, delivered last October 12, for the activation of the Democratic Charter to achieve a solution to the political crisis, in which Castillo faces six open investigations.

“(It is resolved) to designate a high-level group made up of representatives of the member states, following the Inter-American Democratic Charter, to visit Peru to analyze the situation,” the OAS resolution stated.

Likewise, the organization expressed its willingness to provide support and cooperation, at the request of the Government of Peru, through efforts to promote dialogue and strengthen its democratic system.

In turn, the president of the Congress, José Williams Zapata, affirmed that the Parliament is willing to receive the OAS mission, but warned that “in no way will it affect” the proceedings against Castillo.

Castillo argued on Wednesday that the Attorney General’s Office, with the support of Congress and other institutions, is “generating” a series of situations that are part of a “new modality of coup d’état” against him.

In this sense, he rejected the constitutional complaint filed against him before Congress by Attorney General Patricia Benavides, who is investigating him for allegedly heading a criminal organization in the Executive with the purpose of rigging contracts for public works.
