Peruvian Congress president accuses Castillo of using the OAS to obstruct investigations

On Thursday, the Peruvian president of the Peruvian Congress and member of Avanza País (right), José Williams, accused the Peruvian president, Pedro Castillo, of resorting to the Organization of American States (OAS) to obstruct the criminal investigations opened against him.

“As head of the Legislative Power, I must state that I am deeply concerned that the president (…) is using a mechanism such as the Inter-American Democratic Charter to cover up and obstruct the six criminal investigations against him”, said Williams in statements to the press, as reported by RPP radio station.

After the OAS agreed to send a special delegation to Peru to evaluate the situation in the country at Castillo’s request, the president of the Congress affirmed that the Government was trying to “misinform the member countries” of the organization by giving them arguments without the “necessary context” to “understand the behavior” of the Peruvian institutions.

However, Williams assured that although he respects the possible analyses that the OAS may carry out in the country, this will not affect in any way the procedures that will be carried out in the Congress and the Attorney General’s Office of the country.

He has also called on the organization to talk to the country’s authorities beyond the Executive.

“We are willing to be able to receive them, and we think it is going to be good for them to come, to talk to the Attorney General’s Office that, for sure, has a lot to say and a lot to inform; to talk to the Congress, obviously we have many things to tell them; surely they are going to talk to other institutions, such as the press”, he added, as reported by ‘El Comercio’.

Regarding Castillo’s accusations about the apparent illegal proceeding of the Attorney General’s Office by filing a constitutional complaint against him, Williams has maintained that “the constitutional order is not being violated” and that the rule of law is being respected.
