RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Peruvian President Pedro Castillo accepted that, some time ago, he was in favor of granting access to the sea to Bolivia. The president emphasized the need to “open the borders”.

“In an event, it did not even cross my mind to be a candidate. But this is a clamor of Bolivia. Yes, I said it,” said Castillo Terrenos during an interview to CNN, broadcasted on Tuesday, January 25.

“I did not say it as president. It is an idea. But now we will consult the people. For that, we need the people to express themselves. If Peru agrees… I would never do things that the people do not want,” the president said.

In addition, the head of state emphasized that what “the people are clamoring for” will be carried out. He added that one must “live” the borders to know the “great needs”.

“That is their right [access to the sea]. We will do what the people are clamoring for. What the peoples need, what the peoples want. The problem is that, historically, we have been involved in the border issue,” he maintained.

In this sense, Pedro Castillo emphasized that “we not only have to open the borders, but we also have to live the borders”. “Let’s see the borders; there are great needs, and then why put up a barrier”, he pointed out.

However, he assured that his intention was not to give Bolivia access to the sea. “My intention is not [to give Bolivia the sea]. When we went to Bolivia, there was a proposal to bring gas from Bolivia to the country’s south. Tell me, is the country against it?” he concluded.
