Opinion: Is the OAS seeking to prevent the fall of Pedro Castillo?

(Opinion) The “leftization” of the Organization of American States (OAS), whose ambassadors are mostly favorable to the São Paulo Forum -after the electoral triumphs in Honduras, Chile, Colombia, and Peru- is advancing.

On what basis can we make such a statement? When the OAS welcomed “by acclamation” the Peruvian government’s request to send a delegation to the Inca nation to promote a dialogue between the alleged parties in conflict.

What is the alleged “conflict” that has arisen in Peru? None.

An investigation by the Peruvian Attorney General’s Office of Pedro Castillo exists for a series of crimes, among them leading a criminal organization, aggravated influence peddling, and being an accomplice to the crime against public administration in the modality of collusion.

According to the Peruvian Attorney General, Patricia Benavides, what has been taking place is “a fierce obstruction of justice” from this network allegedly “embedded in the Government to monopolize, control, and direct contracting processes to obtain illicit profits”.

Therefore, there is no reason for the OAS to intervene.

What interests Castillo’s allies – inside and outside Peru – is to use the multilateral organization to save one of their allies.

If the new OAS were genuinely interested in defending democracy, justice, and freedoms, then it would be aiming all its batteries against the tyrannies of Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela, where crimes against humanity are committed permanently, in broad daylight, instead of supporting the corrupt members of the São Paulo Forum.

In this sense, we find enlightening the communiqué of the Madrid Forum that condemns “Pedro Castillo’s intention to shield himself by using the OAS to activate the Democratic Charter, arguing that the country’s institutionality is at risk” and recalls that “Pedro Castillo is not being prosecuted for political reasons, but seven cases of crimes committed by him and his family members”.

“This is, therefore, a matter for the competent Peruvian courts, not for the OAS,” it stresses.

The communiqué is clear: Do not be intimidated by the OAS! Do not let their statements and threats prevent Peruvian justice from taking its course!

Unfortunately, the OAS only has mechanisms to denounce, often in the desert, and cannot guarantee the validity of the Democratic Charter.

Otherwise, Diaz-Canel, Ortega, and Maduro would not be governing with impunity.

It is fair to recognize the OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro’s work in his constant denunciation of Nicolás Maduro for his repeated violation of human rights.

All Venezuelans are grateful to him for that, but the organization has been unable to go beyond the denunciation.

In short, we must ignore the dog that barks but does not bite. I recommend Peruvians continue defending their democracy so that they do not end up like us Venezuelans.
