OAS begins deployment of observer mission for general elections in Paraguay

The office in Paraguay of the Organization of American States (OAS) informed this Thursday through a press release that it began its deployment in the South American country of the Electoral Observation Mission (EOM) for the general elections held next April 30.

The electoral Mission is headed by Luis Lauredo, former U.S. Ambassador to the OAS, and is integrated by 60 specialists and observers of 18 nationalities.

It monitors critical aspects of the process, such as organization, technology, electoral justice, overseas voting, political participation of women, political financing, campaigns, and freedom of expression, as well as the political participation of indigenous and Afro-descendant peoples.

According to the official report, in the next few days, the members of the Electoral Observation Mission will meet with electoral authorities and the Government of Paraguay, political leaders and representatives of civil society, and the accredited international community, which will allow them to make an exhaustive analysis of the process.

At the end of its observation mission and after the elections, the Mission will present a preliminary report with its observations and recommendations to strengthen the electoral processes in Paraguay.

This is the sixteenth time the OAS has deployed a mission to observe electoral processes in Paraguayan territory. It is possible thanks to the financial contributions of other countries of the continent, in addition to Spain, Italy, and the Netherlands.

On Sunday, April 30, national and departmental elections will be held in Paraguay, where the President and Vice President of the Republic, senators, deputies, and governors, among other authorities, will be elected.
