Mozambique Election Concerns Spark Calls for Protests

Ossufo Momade, President of Mozambique’s leading opposition party Renamo, has declared peaceful nationwide protests for October 17th.

He voiced concerns about alleged election fraud in recent municipal elections.

Following a significant Renamo political meeting in Maputo, Momade emphasized the aim of non-violent demonstrations, saying, “We don’t want war, just a national demonstration.”

In response to Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant’s remarks about a “complete siege” of Gaza, Momade drew comparisons to Nazi perspectives on Jews.

He further elaborated on his social media platform, previously known as Twitter. Momade stressed that democratic societies shouldn’t allow such views to resurface.

Regarding the protests’ nature, Momade assures they will respect the Mozambican people’s war-weariness.

He, however, hints that the protests’ direction might depend on the current regime’s actions.

He believes Renamo won these elections, marking their first post-disarmament and peace agreement.

The party urges all Mozambicans to join the protests against any potential result manipulation from October 17th onwards.

They call upon civil society, religious groups, and the international community to act bravely and promptly against potential election result tampering.

Momade expects the international community to address the Frelimo party’s behavior, emphasizing different democratic standards for Europe and Mozambique.

Renamo plans to legally challenge the announced results, confident in their evidence of victory. Momade warns that if courts fail, it won’t be due to a lack of complaints.

CNE Clarification Demanded

Furthermore, Renamo demands public clarification from CNE about electoral wrongdoings they’ve allegedly overlooked.

They aim to hold electoral bodies accountable for election mismanagement and seek an audit on questionable ballots.

Mozambique’s Lawyer Order expressed concern over post-election violence, fearing it undermines the election results’ credibility.

Recent intermediate results from various election districts show Frelimo winning in most municipalities, with results challenged by opposition parties and some observers.
