RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – US artist Miley Cyrus’ plane was struck by lightning on its way to Asunción and had to make an emergency landing at Ciudad del Este airport before departing from Paraguay to Brazil.
“Our plane got caught in a big unexpected thunderstorm and was struck by lightning,” the singer wrote on her Twitter account Wednesday to her millions of followers.
The “Angels Like You” hitmaker confirmed that the crew, her band, friends, and family traveling with her “are safe after an emergency landing.”

“Unfortunately we were unable to fly to Paraguay,” she tweeted, attaching a video of the storm from the plane window and a photo of the impact.
Cyrus is one of the stars invited to the Asunciónico 2022 festival, which had to be canceled Tuesday night due to the strong storm that passed over the Paraguayan capital.
A source from Silvio Pettirossi International Airport, which serves Asunción, confirmed to Efe that the artist’s plane had diverted to Guaraní Airport in Ciudad del Este on its way to the city because of the “bad weather.”
The plane flew to São Paulo, Brazil, after refueling, the spokesman added but did not elaborate on the details.
Rodrigo Nogues, director of G5Pro, the organizer of the Asunciónico 2022, told ABC radio that Cyrus was in São Paulo after “having a problem with the plane.”
He did not immediately confirm whether the second day of the show would be canceled.
Thursday’s program at the Asunciónico includes concerts by Cyrus, Nicki Nicole of Argentina, Jhay Cortez of Puerto Rico and Uruguayan band La Vela Puerca.
