Abu Dhabi’s MGX, Microsoft, and BlackRock announced today that Nvidia and Elon Musk’s xAI have joined their ambitious AI Infrastructure Partnership.

The expanded coalition aims to develop essential data centers and power solutions needed to fuel the next generation of artificial intelligence systems. The partnership, originally revealed in September 2024, has rebranded.

It is now known as the AI Infrastructure Partnership (AIP), formerly the Global AI Infrastructure Investment Partnership. The group targets $30 billion in initial funding and could potentially mobilize up to $100 billion when debt financing gets included.

Nvidia will serve as a technical advisor while formally joining as a partner. Chip manufacturer Nvidia brings critical expertise in accelerated computing systems powering today’s most advanced AI models.

Jensen Huang, Nvidia’s CEO, emphasized how AI infrastructure buildout benefits economic growth worldwide. Energy suppliers GE Vernova and NextEra Energy have also agreed to collaborate with AIP.

They will develop diverse energy solutions specifically designed for AI data centers. This partnership addresses the massive power requirements of modern AI systems.

AI Infrastructure Investment and Global Implications

The consortium will focus investments primarily in the United States, with additional deployments in OECD nations and U.S. allies. Their first major project already has concrete plans.

A massive data center breaks ground in Abilene, Texas, with completion expected by mid-2026. The facility will house approximately 400,000 Nvidia AI chips and boast 1.2 gigawatts of power capacity.

This alliance emerges amid fierce competition in AI infrastructure development. President Trump recently unveiled Stargate, a private sector initiative backed by SoftBank, OpenAI, and Oracle seeking to raise $500 billion for similar purposes.

Interestingly, MGX supports both competing ventures. The partnership creates complex relationships within the AI ecosystem. Microsoft has invested approximately $13 billion in OpenAI yet develops competing AI models in-house.

Musk co-founded OpenAI but publicly feuded with CEO Sam Altman over its for-profit transition before launching xAI. Global energy demands from AI continue to surge.

Data centers may consume 1,580 terawatt hours by 2034, equivalent to India’s current electricity usage. Larry Fink, BlackRock’s CEO, noted strong interest from pension funds and insurers seeking long-term infrastructure investments.

The initiative signals a significant strategic alignment of technology leaders and financial powerhouses racing to build the foundation for AI’s future growth.
