Market Mayhem: Brazil’s Ibovespa and the Global Cyber Outage

On Friday, Brazil’s Ibovespa fell marginally by 0.03% to 127,616.46, losing 35.60 points amid global and local events.

The index declined 0.99% this week, marking its first drop after a month of gains. The commercial dollar increased by 0.30% to R$5.60, indicating market volatility.

The chaos began Thursday evening when the Brazilian federal government announced a significant R$15 billion cut in expenditures.

This move, aimed at adhering to self-imposed fiscal framework rules, involved blocking R$11.2 billion from the budget.

The detailed impacts of these cuts will be disclosed next Monday, showcasing President Lula’s commitment to fiscal prudence.

Analysts noted the market viewed this as a necessary evil, recognizing the government’s prior underestimation of mandatory expenses.

Although this provides some relief, analysts believe the government will need to cut an additional R$6 billion by year-end.

One economist expressed concerns that these measures might not adequately sustain public debt.

A global cyber incident caused by a Crowdstrike software glitch disrupted flights, banks, and media.

Crowdstrike CEO George Kurtz reported that they fixed the delayed Y2K-like bug, which was traced to a flawed Windows update.

The cyber outage rippled through global markets, dragging down major indices, including Wall Street.

Disruptions intensified U.S. electoral uncertainties, with Trump running again and Biden facing dwindling party support.

Market Mayhem: Brazil’s Ibovespa and the Global Cyber Outage

In the midst of these global disruptions, São Paulo’s stock market struggled to maintain its recovery momentum.

Ibovespa managed a modest 3% gain in July, having approached the 130,000 points mark after eleven consecutive rises in Brazilian real terms.

However, when adjusted for the U.S. dollar, the picture looks less promising, although it presents potential opportunities for foreign investors.

Local developments also impacted stock movements. Embraer (EMBR3) stood out, rising 1.14% following an 88% rise in Q2 2024 aircraft deliveries.

Additionally, news broke of advanced talks between Brazilian airlines Latam and Gol to integrate Embraer jets into their fleets.

CCR (CCRO3) fell by 1.19% as BNDES subscribed to R$9.41 billion in debentures for infrastructure.

Sabesp (SBSP3), the most active stock, rose 3.51% after a record secondary share offering attracted R$187 ($34.1) billion from institutions.

To cap off the eventful day, a 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck Chile, felt even in São Paulo, although it caused no damage.
