Getting to Maquenque Lodge from San José

The drive from Juan Santamaría International Airport or downtown San José takes roughly three hours north through Alajuela province. The final approach ends at the San Carlos River, where a boat ferries guests across to the lodge.

A rental car or private transfer is the most practical option for the journey. The lodge is not accessible by direct road, which adds to its secluded character and keeps the surrounding forest intact.

The Birdwatching Reality: More Than 590 Species

Maquenque Lodge sits inside the Maquenque National Wildlife Refuge, a protected corridor where over 590 bird species have been documented. The figure reflects updated counts from the lodge and recent birding reports, making it one of Costa Rica’s richest birding destinations.

The endangered Great Green Macaw is the signature species and a core conservation focus. Guests also regularly spot Scarlet Macaws, Keel-billed and Yellow-throated Toucans, King Vultures, and dozens of tanagers, honeycreepers, and hummingbirds.

A dedicated observation hide about ten minutes from the lodge offers close views of King Vultures. Typical sightings range from four to eight birds at distances of eight to fifteen metres, ideal for photography.

Life in a Treehouse at Maquenque Lodge

The treehouse rooms rise roughly 12 metres into the canopy, built directly among the branches. Each unit measures about 45 square metres and includes a private bathroom with solar-heated hot water, a ceiling fan, screened windows, and a balcony with a hammock.

Some newer treehouses add outdoor showers and jacuzzis, though air conditioning is generally absent in favour of natural ventilation. The elevated position means constant jungle sound and frequent bird activity at eye level, especially at dawn and dusk.

These rooms are not suited for guests with mobility limitations or small children due to the stairs and height. For those preferring ground-level comfort, bungalows near the lagoon offer air conditioning and easier access while still delivering excellent birding from the terrace.

A Practical Weekend Itinerary

Arrive on Friday afternoon, cross the river by boat, and check in by 3:00 p.m. Settle into the treehouse and explore nearby trails and the lagoon before sunset, then watch fruit-feeder birds around the restaurant during dinner.

Saturday starts with the 6:00 a.m. guided birdwatching tour through gardens, lagoons, and forest trails when bird activity peaks. Late morning can be spent birding from the treehouse balcony or using the lodge’s canoes on the lagoon.

An afternoon boat trip on the San Carlos River adds waterbirds, kingfishers, and raptors to the list. An optional night walk reveals frogs, snakes, and nocturnal birds before a final Sunday morning birding session and the drive back to San José.

What the Lodge Means for Sustainable Tourism Investment

Maquenque Lodge operates on roughly 68 to 150 acres of protected land with a clear eco-credential model: solar hot water, reforestation programmes, and direct investment in Great Green Macaw conservation. The lodge’s tree-planting initiatives and local school visits form part of a broader sustainable tourism package that appeals to international visitors.

Costa Rica’s eco-lodge sector continues to draw attention from impact investors and hospitality groups looking at Latin America’s green premium. Properties like Maquenque demonstrate that remote, low-density lodges with strong conservation narratives can command steady occupancy from high-value niche markets, particularly birdwatchers from North America and Europe.

The three-hour proximity to San José also makes it viable for weekend domestic tourism, a segment that proved resilient during past downturns in long-haul travel. For expats based in the Central Valley, it represents a repeatable escape rather than a once-a-year destination.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many bird species can you realistically see in a weekend at Maquenque Lodge?

A focused weekend with guided walks and boat trips can easily yield over 100 species, and dedicated birders often record more than 200 in peak conditions. The lodge’s refuge holds over 590 documented species, so the potential is exceptionally high for a short stay.

Are the treehouse rooms suitable for families with children?

The treehouses are not recommended for small children or guests with mobility limitations due to the height and multiple stairs. Families may prefer the ground-level bungalows, which offer air conditioning and easier access while still providing excellent wildlife viewing.

What is the best time of year for birdwatching at Maquenque Lodge Costa Rica?

Birding is excellent year-round, but the dry season from December to April generally offers more predictable weather and easier trail access. The green season from May to November brings lush foliage and high bird activity, though afternoon rain showers are common in this lowland rainforest climate.
