Lula Warns Against “Enemies of Democracy” While Brazil Silences Its Own Opposition

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva declared that “enemies of democracy use trade as a tool of coercion and blackmail,” echoing a style of rhetoric typical of leftwing politics in recent years.

Lula leveled this charge at Donald Trump and his allies in response to the United States’ imposition of a sweeping 50% tariff on Brazilian exports, an act officially justified by concerns over Brazil’s treatment of its former president, Jair Bolsonaro.
