Big Techs Want Pix on Their Platform as Brazil Tightens Digital Rules

Big tech companies are pressing Brazil’s government to let them add Pix, the free instant payment service, to their platforms.

This comes as Brazil’s leaders, including President Lula and Vice-President Alckmin, push for stronger rules and taxes on powerful foreign tech firms.

Pix, built by Brazil’s Central Bank in 2020, is now used by more than 160 million Brazilians—about 75% of the population, according to official data.

It processed over 10 billion transfers in six months last year, offering instant, free payments and helping small businesses and people outside the traditional banking system.

At a recent meeting, tech giants like Google and Meta told Vice-President Alckmin that they want “Pix for all,” meaning they hope to handle Pix payments in their apps and give users more ways to pay.

Alckmin said any Pix expansion must stay free for users and not raise costs. Brazil’s Supreme Court just decided that social media companies must act quickly to remove illegal content or face liability, raising the stakes for global firms operating in the country.

This goes further than US or European rules. Meanwhile, a dispute is brewing between Brazil and the US. President Trump, frustrated by Brazilian court decisions against US platforms, slapped a 50% tariff on Brazilian goods.

Lula Draws Line with Big Tech as Pix Surges in Brazil

Lula hit back, saying Brazil will not ease up on taxes or rules for foreign tech companies and will defend “national rules” over platforms. Pix keeps growing as the main digital payment option in Brazil, beating credit cards in volume, based on Central Bank data.

Tech companies see a big business opportunity, but must now navigate tougher local laws and possible new taxes if they want access to Brazil’s huge digital market.
