LatAm Ministers Finalize Unified Climate Proposal for COP28

Environment ministers from 33 Latin American and Caribbean countries met in Panama.

They aimed to finalize a unified climate change proposal for the upcoming COP28 conference in Dubai.

Time is running out, as they must approve this proposal by the end of the week.

The ministers gathered during the Latin America and Caribbean Climate Week. This event drew over 3,000 participants.

Delegates came from local governments, indigenous communities, and the private sector. One point of concern came up during a public session.

Maria Susana Muhamad, Colombia’s Environment Minister, emphasized that Latin America needs a united voice in global climate discussions, unlike in the past.

In the meeting, ministers discussed various viewpoints, especially on fossil fuels and the role of developing countries.

Despite these differences, they strive to find common ground. One focus is the transition to renewable energy.

Maria added that immediate actions are more urgent than long-term plans. A special case of climate-induced migration also came up.

Officials highlighted that an indigenous community in Panama must relocate due to rising sea levels. This case is one of the first examples of climate migrants in Latin America.

Looking Ahead to Cop28

Looking ahead to COP28, the conference will address a range of topics. These include reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adopting renewable energy sources.

Additional aid to developing countries is also on the agenda. Back in Panama, forums during the week touched on other climate-related issues.

Topics ranged from natural disaster mitigation to the conservation of mangroves. A youth-focused initiative also launched.

It aims to create a million “green jobs” for young people in the future.

Amidst these discussions, protests have erupted in various cities, including Panama City. Demonstrators demand the cancellation of a mining contract with a Canadian company.

This company operates the largest copper mine in Central America.
