The Short Version
In short: Your LatAm expat and nomad daily guide for Saturday, 10 October 2026. Hurricane Simón became a Category 3 storm on Friday night and Mexican forecasters expect it to reach the Colima–Jalisco coast on Sunday. Brazil’s inflation rose to 4.58% in September, above the central bank’s 4.5% ceiling. Monday 12 October is a public holiday in Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Colombia. Prediction markets price a Bolsonaro win of Brazil’s presidency near 89% (bets, not polls).
01

01Getting Around

Mexico’s Pacific coast: Hurricane Simón. Simón intensified to Category 3 on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale on Friday night. Mexican media citing the NHC report maximum sustained winds of 195 km/h (121 mph), with the centre about 245 km (152 miles) south of Manzanillo, Colima. A Category 3 storm is a major hurricane, with winds from 178 km/h (111 mph).

Forecasts point to a landfall on Sunday 11 October between Puerto Vallarta in Jalisco and Manzanillo in Colima, as a Category 3 or 4 storm. UnoTV put the first landfall around 6 a.m. Mexico central time, while an earlier Infobae report said Sunday midday, so the hour is uncertain. Infobae reported forecast rainfall of 150 to 250 mm (6 to 10 inches) on the Guerrero and Michoacán coasts.

We could not read the NHC bulletins directly, and the track and strength can still change. If you have a flight or hotel on the coast of Colima, Jalisco or Nayarit this weekend, ask your airline or hotel about changes and follow local civil protection instructions. Our earlier storm report tracked the forecast through the week.

Peru: a joint command against crime. On Wednesday 7 October President Keiko Fujimori announced a unified command that joins the Armed Forces and the National Police, Andina reported. It has 1,350 personnel, a control centre at Army headquarters in Lima and an elite search-and-capture group. She also created a Special Commission Against Crime and promised to expel foreign criminals “in record time”. No budget or start date was published. Our visitor guide explains what is known.

A holiday Monday. Monday 12 October is a national holiday in Brazil (Our Lady of Aparecida), Argentina, Chile (Encounter of Two Worlds) and Colombia. Brazil’s stock exchange, B3, is closed and bank branches shut, while banking apps keep working. See our closures guide.

Brazil: loud weeks, normal days. Campaigning continues until the runoff on Sunday 25 October, 15 days away. Foreign residents do not vote.

02Cost of Living & Money

Each measure is labelled, and dates differ by country. Brazil, Chile and Argentina are Friday’s figures; Colombia is the official rate in force over the weekend; Mexico and Peru are market estimates.
Brazil. The PTAX fixing was 4.9892 reais to sell on Friday 9 October, against 5.0119 on Thursday and 5.2238 on Friday 2 October. At 4.9892, R$1,000 is about US$200. Prices rose 0.82% in September and 4.58% over 12 months, IBGE reported. Housing costs rose 2.31% in the month. Our rent and power-bill guide has the detail.

Mexico. We use a market estimate of 18.33 pesos per dollar from open.er-api.com, updated at midnight UTC on Saturday. It is not the official FIX rate (Banxico’s daily reference rate). At 18.33, MXN 10,000 is about US$546.

Chile. The observado (the official dollar rate) was 981.61 pesos on Friday 9 October, against 979.85 on Thursday. At 981.61, CLP 1,000,000 is about US$1,019. The UF (Chile’s inflation-indexed unit used in rents and mortgages) is 41,136.24 pesos for Saturday, about US$42.

Colombia. The TRM (the official representative rate) is 3,194.44 pesos per dollar for Saturday 10 to Monday 12 October. It was 3,218.75 on Friday. At 3,194.44, COP 1,000,000 is about US$313.

Argentina. DolarApi shows the official Banco Nación rate at 1,485 to buy and 1,535 to sell (Friday afternoon). The blue (informal market rate) is 1,520 and 1,540. The CCL (contado con liquidación, a rate for dollars bought through securities) is 1,605.5 and 1,606.6. ARS 1,000,000 is about US$651 at the official sell rate and about US$622 at the CCL sell rate. ArgentinaDatos puts country risk at 589 points on Friday 9 October.

Peru. We could not obtain SUNAT’s (the tax authority’s) rate. A market estimate from open.er-api.com, updated at midnight UTC on Saturday, shows 3.443 soles per dollar, and banks quote their own rates. At 3.443, PEN 1,000 is about US$290.

The wider picture. The dollar sold for 5.22 reais on 2 October and 4.99 on 9 October, so the real is stronger than a week ago. One week does not set a trend, and currencies often overshoot after political news and then settle.

Colombia: 21 days left. Foreigners holding a permanent-resident visa issued under earlier rules must transfer it by Saturday 31 October 2026, the Foreign Ministry has reiterated. The process is online; the ministry advises using its official site without intermediaries. Our earlier explainer sets out who is affected.

Peru: expulsions of foreign criminals. Fujimori said the government will expel foreigners who commit crimes “in record time”. No legal change, number or deadline has been published, and there is no sign yet of changes to visa rules for law-abiding residents.
