Ibovespa Gains Fizzle Amid Central Bank Caution and Looming U.S. Trade Barriers

Brazil’s B3 index edged higher on Tuesday, closing at 133,151.30, according to official market figures. Despite global headwinds, the Ibovespa performed slightly better as large banks, notably Itaú Unibanco, drove modest gains.

Investors closely watched fresh policy signals from the Central Bank and the looming impact of new U.S. tariffs, scheduled to start today.

The index went up by just 0.14% after traders digested the Monetary Policy Committee’s minutes, highlighting the cautious decision to keep the benchmark Selic rate at 15%.

Policymakers flagged continued risks over U.S. trade policies, which will see a 50% tariff imposed on Brazilian exports from this Wednesday. The Brazilian real stayed almost unchanged at R$5.506 to the U.S. dollar.

Markets tracked key corporate earnings. Itaú Unibanco anticipated strong second-quarter results, keeping banking shares supportive. Brava Energia topped the winners with a jump of more than 5%, after posting a historic record in oil and gas output.

On the losing side, CSN and Klabin dropped more than 2% each, as their latest operational updates failed to meet analysts’ EBITDA expectations.

Globally, volatility and caution dominated. Wall Street stocks closed lower, as risk aversion increased on weaker-than-expected ISM Services PMI numbers.

The Dow Jones retreated 0.14%, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq lost 0.49% and 0.65%, respectively. U.S. President Donald Trump warned of more tariffs, not just for Brazil but for India too.

Asian markets bucked the trend, posting higher closes with Japan’s Nikkei and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng both rising. In Europe, BP’s discovery of a major Brazilian oilfield lifted the Stoxx 600 by 0.13%.

Analysis of the Ibovespa’s daily chart reveals a market weighed down by resistance. Prices remain trapped below the 50-, 100-, and 200-day moving averages, a sign of prevailing downward pressure.

Bollinger Bands show low volatility, indicating consolidation. The Ichimoku Cloud marks strong resistance, with the price unable to break above its upper boundaries.

Recent momentum signs are negative. The MACD, a common trend indicator, hovers near the zero line but looks set to turn negative—raising the risk of more downtrend if conviction follows through.

RSI levels hover around 41-44, suggesting fragile momentum and limited buyer appetite. The Global Liquidity Index NDQ, represented by the yellow line, indicates stagnating external inflows, making sustained rallies less likely.

Volumes on major ETFs like BOVA11 have increased, signaling growing interest but also concern regarding future volatility as investors weigh the impact of tariffs and domestic uncertainty.

Brazil’s fiscal outlook remains a challenge, with persistent deficits and high government debt levels constraining policy choices. Selling may accelerate if the index fails to hold above 132,000 or if the MACD crosses deeper into negative territory.

Fundamentals, technicals, and external conditions point to a fragile market where buyers show little conviction. The B3’s mild gain reflects more caution than optimism, with global risks likely to drive near-term direction.
