Brazil’s Ibovespa Rises 1% Amid Global Tariff Optimism and Earnings Caution
Brazil’s benchmark Ibovespa closed up 1%, ending at 135,368.27 points on July 23, supported by optimism over U.S.
Brazil’s benchmark Ibovespa closed up 1%, ending at 135,368.27 points on July 23, supported by optimism over U.S. tariff agreements.
The market reacted positively after the United States announced lower import tariffs on Japanese goods, sparking risk appetite worldwide.
The Brazilian Real strengthened against the dollar, closing 0.79% lower at R$5.5230, influenced by improved global trade sentiment.
However, trading volume fell to around R$16.85 billion, below July’s monthly average of R$21.66 billion, indicating caution among investors. Domestically, investor attention focused on corporate results rather than fiscal updates.
The Brazilian government reduced its projected spending cuts from R$31.3 billion to R$10.7 billion. Market analysts labeled this revision realistic but warned of potential disappointment risks ahead.

WEG’s stock led declines after weaker-than-expected earnings. Despite reporting a second-quarter profit increase of 10.4% to R$1.59 billion, revenue growth slowed, particularly in wind energy and industrial segments.
Investor unease over tariff uncertainties further pressured its share price. Vale, another heavyweight, declined slightly despite exceeding production expectations in iron ore, copper, and nickel.
Meanwhile, Petrobras shares rose over 2%, buoyed by its pre-salt oil exploration agreement with Shell and PPSA in Jubarte, located in Brazil’s Campos Basin.
Construction firm MRV recorded significant gains after Santander maintained a buy recommendation. Analysts cited MRV’s attractive valuation and favorable technical conditions, with over 25% of its available shares short-sold, positioning it for a potential upward move.
Technical indicators reveal cautious optimism. Ibovespa remains above its 200-day simple moving average near 132,500, suggesting the long-term upward trend remains intact.
The Relative Strength Index (RSI) rose moderately, signaling strengthening momentum without reaching overbought levels. MACD indicators on the daily and 4-hour charts suggest weakening bearish momentum and potential bullish reversals.
Bollinger Bands indicate reduced volatility, hinting at possible upcoming price movements. The Global Liquidity Index NDQ, reflecting available liquidity, showed moderate improvement, aligning with increased investor confidence.
Fundamentally, Brazil’s June trade surplus fell short of expectations at US$5.89 billion, down from a forecast of US$6.45 billion. Revised fiscal projections also prompted caution, potentially restricting future economic flexibility.
Globally, markets in the U.S., Asia, and Europe advanced. Japan’s Nikkei surged 3.51%, while the European Stoxx 600 climbed 1.08%, driven by tariff deal optimism. U.S. indices S&P 500 and Nasdaq closed at new record highs, reinforcing positive global sentiment.
Overall, the Ibovespa responded positively to global tariff developments and selective corporate earnings, despite underlying caution reflected in lower trading volumes and fiscal adjustments. Investors now await further corporate results and additional tariff negotiations.
