Itaú Unibanco, Brazil’s leading private bank, announced a recurring net profit of R$11.5 billion ($2.05 billion) for the second quarter of 2025.

This is a 14.3% rise over last year, according to the bank’s official statements. The results highlight Itaú Unibanco’s strong position in an economy marked by uncertainty, with the bank securing a higher return on equity—23.3%—than its main local rivals.

Behind the big numbers, Itaú’s story is one of caution and discipline rather than wild growth. It keeps the risk of customer defaults low, with loans overdue 90 days steady at 1.9%, better than many competitors and a multi-year low.

Credit in the bank’s portfolio reached R$1.4 trillion ($250 billion), but instead of lending recklessly, Itaú lent more carefully, favoring backed and less risky loans.

The bank’s financial margin with clients, or the profit made on loans and deposits, increased 15.4% to R$30.3 billion ($5.4 billion).

Revenues from services and insurance also went up 3.1% to R$14.2 billion ($2.5 billion), helped by growth in credit card and insurance business.

Itaú’s Disciplined Strategy Boosts Confidence in Brazil’s Financial Stability

At the same time, expenses rose nearly 10% to R$16.5 billion ($2.95 billion) as Itaú poured money into digital banking technology and also paid higher wages after labor agreements. These details come directly from Itaú’s quarterly reports.

What does this mean for outsiders and investors? Itaú is showing that a large bank can thrive by avoiding risky shortcuts and focusing on stability.

Its leaders chose to build profits on strong risk controls, ongoing investment in digital banking, and keeping close watch on costs, not on growing as quickly as possible.

What’s more, Itaú expects steady gains to continue, raising forecasts for how much money it will make from its clients through the year. For people outside Brazil, Itaú’s approach is a signal that large emerging market banks can weather tough times if they stay disciplined.

This bank’s profits bolster confidence in Brazil’s broader financial landscape at a time when many economies, even outside Latin America, see increased volatility.

Itaú’s careful choices may be less flashy than dramatic growth, but they keep savings, investments, and credit flowing, which is vital for regular people and for businesses looking to invest and hire.
