The MV Barima was a government-run passenger ferry connecting Georgetown, the capital, with Port Kaituma, a remote community reachable mainly by water. On July 19 it capsized with an estimated 179 people aboard.

In the days since, the country has been counting its dead and searching for answers.

A Rising Toll

By July 22, Prime Minister Mark Phillips said the confirmed death toll had climbed to 65, with fears it could go higher as recovery continued. Around 76 of those aboard survived.

Neighboring Brazil and Trinidad and Tobago sent help as the recovery effort widened.

The Commission of Inquiry

The government said it will establish an independent commission of inquiry as soon as possible to determine what happened before the ferry departed and whether operating procedures were followed.

Officials said the aim is to safeguard the integrity of the investigation and prevent any tampering with evidence.

Questions Over the Crew

The ferry’s captain and at least one other crew member were taken into custody after testing positive for marijuana, and all staff involved in managing and loading the vessel were suspended.

Those details are among the threads the inquiry is expected to pull on, from crew fitness to how the ferry was loaded.

Why It Matters

For remote parts of Guyana, ferries are a lifeline, and their safety is a matter of survival for communities with few alternatives.

The inquiry’s findings will shape whether the tragedy leads to lasting changes in how the country runs and regulates its passenger boats.
