Grupo Modelo Hidalgo brewery: Article on $760M plant retracted
Editor’s Note · Retraction
Retracted 27 July 2026
On 26 July 2026, The Rio Times published an article reporting that Grupo Modelo was building a new US$760 million brewery in Apan, Hidalgo, Mexico, and presented it as current news. That was wrong.
The investment and the brewery it described were announced in 2017, and the plant has been operating since 2019. There has been no new development, and the article’s central premise does not stand.
We have retracted it. In line with our Corrections and Clarifications policy, we have kept this web address live rather than delete the page, changed the headline that carried the error, and recorded the retraction on our corrections log.
The error originated in an automated editorial process that surfaced archival material as if it were new, and our checks did not catch it before publication. We have since added a recency safeguard that dates the core event of every published article and takes down anything that reports a past event as current news.
We apologize to Grupo Modelo and to our readers.
