Greenland at the Center: Denmark Presses U.S. Over Alleged Influence Campaign

Denmark has demanded answers from Washington after claims that Americans tied to Donald Trump tried to sway Greenland toward independence.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen summoned U.S. chargé d’affaires Mark Stroh in Copenhagen, calling any attempt to interfere in Denmark’s internal affairs unacceptable.

The U.S. confirmed the meeting but refused to comment on “private citizens.” Greenland is not just a remote island. It is an autonomous part of Denmark with 56,000 people living on a territory the size of Western Europe, most of it ice-covered.

It receives a Danish block grant of around 4 billion kroner—over 500 million dollars—every year to sustain its economy. At the same time, the island is rich in minerals and sits on vital shipping lanes in the Arctic.

It also hosts the Pituffik Space Base, which the U.S. military relies on for missile warning and space surveillance. This is not the first time the issue has flared up.

In March 2025, Trump told Congress the U.S. would acquire Greenland “one way or another” and later declined to rule out force. The remarks revived memories of his 2019 bid to buy the island, which Denmark flatly rejected.

Greenland itself is debating its future. In elections earlier this year, the Demokraatit party became the largest in parliament. It supports independence but wants a gradual process tied to economic stability.

Danish intelligence, meanwhile, warns that foreign influence campaigns target Greenland to stir divisions with Copenhagen. The bigger story is not just a diplomatic clash but the struggle over control of the Arctic.

Greenland offers resources, trade routes, and military positions that matter in a world competing for security and energy. For Denmark, the issue is sovereignty. For Washington, it is strategic reach. For Greenlanders, it is about deciding their own future without outside manipulation.
